I had pulled the trigger and ordered a CalDigit back in February after all of the rave reviews it received around the Cow. There was an order conflict with the vendor and it was never shipped and I was never charged. After reading a few recent posts about the product I have canceled the order.

Now, The big question. A callout to Walter, Shane, Bob and the other true daily testers of these products. What is the choice today. I understand that this could change next week and I will not hold anyone liable.

My budget still remains around 4k and I need to purchase a sata raid solution asap. Equivalent to the SVR2HD 3.75 w/ card.

Sonnet’s latest fusion series looks really interesting…

I will be taking a hard look at these in the near future. They have Raid 4 or 5 (and others) built in to the HBA. Looks promising and the price comes with a card.

I have the S2VR Duo…two of them in fact…and they are rock solid. I know that Walter didn’t have issues with these until he striped them all together. And I know that more than one person had issues with the S2VR HD…an issue that CalDigit is working on resolving.

Just like the Sonnet Fusion, CalDigit also offers a Raid 5 PCIexpress solution. HDPro is a RAID 5 solution that starts at $4k for 2TB. Goes up to 6 TB for $8k.

What are your needs? What will you be editing? DVCPRO HD and Uncompressed SD can be edited fine on the Duos…and you can get more than one. Just don’t RAID them all together. They are plenty fast on their own.

I am only talking CalDigit because they are the drives I have experience with. All the other RAID solutions I have are home-made. But I hear great things about the Sonnet and Firmtek stuff. And the 3ware Sidecar.

I’m also considering the Sonnet Fusion RAIDs. I saw them at NAB. The card is made by ATTO
for Sonnet and is not sold separately. The units are competitively priced and seem to be
built well. But so did the CalDigit units. Decisions Decisions.

I’ve been using the CalDigit S2VR HD 3.75TB myself. In fact, I have two of them. One mirrors the other. I’ve been using them for a few months now and have had no problems. Just great performance. I am running them off a MacPro, Quad Core 3.0, 8GB ram.

They’ve been a great addition to my edit suite.

Maybe Walter just got a bad batch of units. Glad to hear yours are working Jim.
I believe the price between the Sonnet and the CalDigit is about the same.
So now it gets even more interesting.

Yeah, but the cards for Sonnet are made by ATTO, who makes Caldigit’s?

Also, it’s SAS on the Sonnets. I can’t wait to check these out.

I could be wrong, and correct me if I am, but I believe CalDigit makes its own cards.

I doubt it, they might write the drivers, but I bet they don’t make them.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Currently the facility is SD with some stuff shot in HDV, but looking at building a system that will fly with DVCPROHD in the near future.
This is an brand new suite being built that includes a new 8 Core MacPro, Kona 3 w/BOB, Kona IO LA, and a HD10AVA to take the HDV in as DVCPROHD via Kona 3.

Please correct me if I am mistaken but currently The Sonnet units comparable to the CalDigits are not available.

I am sure these will not be stripped together so I may continue with the CalDigits. I just became gun shy after a previous thread that exposed Walter’s issues but I must have speed read the fact it was isolated to the stripping.

    Here’s a quote from CalDigit’s website:
“Because both S2VR and interface card are designed by CalDigit, we offer single vendor support to eliminate compatibility issues.”
