Activity Forums Adobe After Effects Expressions Rounded waveform?

  • Posted by Aharon Rabinowitz on June 27, 2006 at 8:25 pm

Has anyone created a rounded audio waveform? AE’s waveform tools only do sharp angles.

Basically, I want the audio to be represented in smooth curvy lines.

I can think of at least 2 ways to do this by hand, but they aren’t easy or fast. I was hoping that it could be done without it. My cleint is under a tight budget and can’t afford the time it would take to do this by hand and match the audio well.

    Thanks.

I would suggest creating a solid layer, and then attaching the effect wave warp to the solid, and it will give you the wave you might be looking for, then I would personally use Trapcode Sound Keys to make keyframes of your music files, but if you don’t have that plugin then go to your keyframe assistant and conver audio to keyframes. Then you’ll use the expression pickwhip to attach the the wave height, wave speed to the audio keyframes. That should help for starters.

Stroke on a 2 point mask, then Wave Warp with Wave Height pickwhipped to Audio Keyframes (expression adjusted with *5 to give it more height on my test), adjust Wave width to taste. It’s not perfect (multiple wave look at times) but may work.

For some reason I didn’t get emailed from the responses.

As a matter of fact, after a sleepless night, I figured it out. Like you suggested, It does involve wave warp and a stroke or line, and my client thinks it looks good with just standard AE audio Keyframes.

I got to thinking in terms of that because a few years ago I saw an animation that looked like a 3D ribbon, but all they did was use some warping effects (Bulge) to pinch the ribbon so it looked like it was moving further away and closer, and therefore around an object. Not a very involved effect (and not the one people always ask about around here) but was effective. it got me thinking that if you could fake the “3D” there had to be an easy way to fake the 2D change of direction, and sure enough, the wave warp was the way to go. Just animate the height based on sound.

After I figured it out I saw all of these suggestions. So thanks!

I’ll be making this into a tutorial, i think.
