  • Resolve 8.0.1 + Mac Pro 4,1 + Red Rocket + GTX285&GT120 + OSX Lion 10.7.1 Problem!!

Posted by Matt Ryan on October 5, 2011 at 8:41 pm

    Hello,
I borrowed a friends Red Rocket card and Resolve dongle to color a project. My system is a Mac Pro 4,1 2x 2.26 Quad core with 12gb 1033 ram running OSX 10.7.1 Lion. I am running the latest version of Resolve 8.0.1 and my cuda driver and firmware as been updated and includes the beta Lion firmware.

My PCIE configuration is as follows:
    Slot 1: GTX285 (GPU)
    Slot 2: Red Rocket
    Slot 3: GT120 (GUI)
    Slot 4: Decklink Extreme 3D+

I am working on a project with strictly Red files. Conformed from a FCP XML relinked to the R3D’s. With my timeline set to 1080p and 1/2 good resolution I am only getting between 1.5 to 3fps playback with no corrections just the Raw file playback. What is going on?

In Redcine x i get full 4k playback in realtime at full resolution and yet I cant get Resolve to run at 1/2 good using the Cuda of the GTX285 and the Red Rocket. Its like the program is not reading either card. To Troubleshoot I plugged my ACD 30 into the GTX and playback was the same as when it was plugged into the GT120 GUI card. I then pulled the Red Rocket and still got the same performance. What is going on here? I was going to invest in Resolve software for myself but with performance like this theres no way. What could be the issue here? I am running the latest firmware and driver for the Red Rocket and my system reads all the cards correctly in the system profiler. Also even when I enable proxy playback my fps does not increase. I also have the FCS3 Red plugin installed and all other necessary system plugins and installers. Im not going to put the rocket in slot 3 or 4 as that will completely cripple its full potential by dropping it down to a 4x pcie slot.

Thanks for your help in advance.

You should reverse the slot 2 and 3 cards. The GT120 needs to be in a x16 slot. Yes, I know the RR is a x8 card, but it will work OK in slot 3 or 4.

    Hi Dwayne,
This helped get me up to 20fps on clips with no corrections applied but my clip that has three nodes, 2 of which are selective NR run at 1.5fps.

I am also now getting a half bad image displayed in the viewer during playback. It looks corrupted (Blue blobs on top half of video).

So you are only getting 20 FPS with NO corrections?

Are you getting any GPU warning messages?

Yeah I disabled all nodes and playback at 1/2 res premium is only 20fps max and dips down to 7fps at times.

I tested redcine and still able to view full res real time. Also my Davinci about screen only lists one GPU. Shouldn’t it read 2 with the RR? Dumb question i know

I assume you are getting this speed with a Red clip? What Red settings are you using? What you should use is half-res Premium. Full res premium will NOT play back at full speed, because the RR is in the x4 slot. So that’s just the way you have to work, if you need to put the RR in the Mac chassis. This is the way everyone with a RR in the Mac (running Resolve) normally works.

You may want to check if the RR card’s firmware is the latest.

Yeah the RR driver and firmware are the most recent. I have no trouble with Redcine playback at full res.

Thanks Dwaine I appreciate the help. So I did a system restart and cleared all nodes from my red r3d’s in resolve and I get a solid 24fps playback. My only question is the red bar at the top next to the fps, shouldn’t that be green? I occasionally have it drop to 20fps with two or so nodes. This is using 1/2 res premium.
    Thanks again

As Peter mentioned in the Red thread, you should be able to get at least 8 nodes of correction in Half Res mode with an HD timeline. Is your Config page Timeline Resolution set to 1920×1080?.

Yes, the GPU bar should be green.

You should not have any displays connected to the GTX-285 card, as that would reduce performance significantly.

Do you have any WFM displays open? This might also reduce performance. But it shouldn’t be this big of a hit. If you do have any open, try closing them all and see if that helps.

Someone in this forum in the past related that background apps running on the Mac can have adverse performance impacts. They specifically mentioned Chrome browser running Flash apps, HP printer driver and Dropbox. If you have any of those, or other apps running with Resolve, that might be a problem.

You mentioned on the Red forum that you had no issues using a Quicktime file. If you can load a QT file, and get several nodes of correction, but not with the Red files at Half Res Premium, there might still be something Rocket related going on. As Peter mentioned in the Red forum, with the Rocket removed, you should be able to playback in realtime with 1/4 Res Good settings. On our system here, pretty identical to your setup minus the Rocket card, we get very good performance in 1/8 Res Good mode.

I think we all are assuming you are using 4K files, although I don’t see anywhere that you’ve mentioned the file type. If you are using 5K Epic files, those are more processor intensive, and that would be a problem. I’ve heard that you need 2 Rocket cards to process 5K Epic files in real time. But I’m not sure if that is in Half Res mode, or only in Full Res mode.

I always kill background apps and processes before running Resolve. Yes I am working with 4k files in a 1920×1080 timeline at 1/2 good. I know the Red Rocket is fine because I am able to view Red Raw files in full resolution real time and transcoding in real time.
I never plug anything into the GPU or in this case the GTX285. Yes I do have a waveform and parade window open. I will try closing them and seeing what that does.

Why isn’t the colored bar at the top green? What does red or no bar at all mean?
