Render management, any ideas or feedback?
Hi,
I know this topic has come up often, so I have searched for quite a while now here at the Cow and online. I’m wondering what direction to go before really taking the jump. I work in both 2D and 3D (with Max) and Afx.Until now, I’ve just used a simple render setup with my few machines and (albiet it was more work) so far it has worked just fine. But now I’m thinking for the long run with more projects in the pipe. I need better file management when it comes to rendering. I would love to use Linux for the rendering OS, but I’m curious is it all command line operations or is there a easy interface for the OS. I’m not all that good with command line interfacing but I’m sure I can learn. Any ideas, what’s better than the other?
Plus would I need different licenses of Afx or Max on Linux?
What is the FlexLM License server or host? I have noticed this from time to time and can’t figure out what they are referring to exactly?
I also would like to use one of the following and need some feedback on personal pros and cons if you can provide them.
Butterfly NetRender – I know it is mostly for Lightwave but is it stable enough for AE or Max and how is the interface, ease of use, platform issues?
Muster – I know is specific to Maya, Xsi, but they say it is for 3DS Max and Adobe Afx as well which could be very nice for me. Maybe?
Rush – the HUGE draw back on this app is the Perl based scripting for job cues. Besides that, how does it measure up to other apps?
And finally “Deadline” from Frantic Films: Any takers on this one? It may be expensive but it does look very promising.
I appreciate any help you can provide me, thanks…
Tom
