  • removing expression…but keeping the current position

hi all … i’ve applied an expression to a number of solids to give them a random Z-position … i’ve manually set the X and Y. The expression takes a random seed from the index value…

now I have all the solids where I like them and want them to stay where they are … but when I add new layers it changes the random seed and therefore changes the position …. if I just turn off the expression the solid moves back to its original Z position …. is there a way for me to disable the expression and keep the solid in its current position?

    does this make sense?

Animation > Keyframe Assistants > Convert Expression to Keyframes might be your best bet.

Or, you could apply a bunch of sliders to a single null, use your random expression on each slider, link the sliders to the z positions of your other layers, and always keep the null at the top of the layer stack.

A good trick here is to set your comp to be ONE frame long and then do the Convert to Keyframes trick. That gives a fast result and only one keyframe to delete for each layer.
