Remove Grain – strange behavior…?
I’m degraining some footage in preparation for keying and noticed that if I pre-compose the footage before degraining it, it does a much better job! I have absolutely no idea why, and am wondering if anyone has any ideas…
The footage is a 1920×1080 quicktime, DNxHD shot from Avid. I’m have literally nothing else but Remove Grain on there, with default settings except for Temporal Filtering (which is on). I’m in AE CS5.5 on Windows 7.
I uploaded sample images to show the difference (check out the channels).

One thing I can think of: by default Remove Grain takes the grain sample at the first frame of the source footage (not the inpoint).
If for instance the footage was exported from Avid with a black frame in the beginning, or a totally different image, the algorithm isn’t going to be very effective.
In the Remove Grain plugin you can actually choose to see the sample frame to see what’s going on and if you want to sample from a different frame you can adjust the source frame number.

Hm, yeah that’s a good point – I guess it could be grabbing a different frame.
