ProRes (HQ) gets my vote…
For the record, the Kona codec you’ve been using is a “legacy” codec, only still around as a service of AJA to those who might encounter it when repurposing an old clip etc.

With your computer, I’d go DVCPro HD, but you are going to lose a bit of quality.
You can always reconnect to the Uncompressed files later.

well we usually give our clients uncompressed. I know its always best to try and stay at the same codec till the end. But I cant use the uncompressed and play back through aja cona. Would this change anything on the codec i should export from maya? My boss is also very big on staying with the highest quality possible. Hes short of a stickler about it.

Yes you can. I used to do it everyday back in the G5 days. With a lot of rendering just like you!

You could use the Apple 8 bit Uncompressed codec, but it’s not going to give you any more real time. What you need to do, is keep your current workflow, then convert the Maya render to DVCPro HD. That will give you more real time. At the end of the project, you media manage your project to AJA 2vuy and reconnect to original MAYA renders.

Then he needs to get you the proper tools to do just that, otherwise he’s asking you to do the impossible.

Maybe I am doing something wrong then because if i had an uncompressed codec (rather then an aja) I could never get it to play back on my tv.

You simply choose the easy setup that mathces your source footage. If you have Uncompressed 8bit 720p material, you choose the AJA Uncompressed 8 bit 720p59.94 easy setup.

okay i will have to give that a try in a sec (im rendering something right now) Thats another question I actually had though. Since Im working with 30fps (since i’m working with animation) The output in FCP canvas always looks like crap (because it is trying to display it like its 59.97. No it looks fine on the Tv but if I want it to look fine in FCP i have to set it to “none” which then doesnt let it play back on the tv ha. Have you ever had this problem?

Just go to View>>Video Playback Settings and change to Kona 1080i 29.97 8-bit, your monitor can’t play 10-bit, can’t play 30fps, but it will play 8-bit at 29.97 and that’s what the Kona will output if you tell it to…
