red bar when i add transitions in FCP???
I though FCP got better with handling this. Any time i add a transition i have to render it out ( i get a red bar ) My footage is 720×1080 30fps aja2buy compressor

What drives do you have? Do you mean 1280×720 or 1920×1080?

What type of hard drive storage are you using? What are your RT settings? How many layers of audio, video, graphics, and text are you working with?
The hard drive thing is the most important of all. If you using a single firewire drive and cutting HD you’re bound to hit the throughput limitation more often than if you have a raid.
Also, which effects are you using? Some are RT some not…

sorry i meant 1280×720 30 fps.
As far as how many video/audio layers I am using it really depends. I am working on a 3d edit so it consistently being updated. It usually averages about 4-8 video tracks and maybe 3-6 audio. But even if i just have one video and one audio it still gives me a red bar.
My RT settings (the drop down one the timeline) is set to “use playback” Which in my system settings is set to “unlimited” and the box next to it is unchecked. Is that correct? I never really am sure what to set that as.
the drive im using is fiber its a 1 tb

You’re working with a codec that is not rt enabled so you might see some slow downs.

Jeremy what do you mean? I am confused.. haha sorry. I thought FCP could do transitions in Real time even in uncompressed. Thanks for the quick responses

Yeah, it can, but you have to have really fast drives to do it and you shoudl be using the 8 or 10bit Uncompressed codecs. You are using the 2Vuy. In order for FCP to work in real time in uncompressed, you need to tweak your system. How fast is your processor? How fast are your drives running?
And I’ll mention again, third party codecs won’t be supported in real time in FCP.

Im working on a dual 2 ghz power Pc g5. The reason I have the compression set to Aja 2 vuy is so i am able to view it on the tv via aja kona card. I didnt think you could do that with uncompressed codec(or any other at that)… can you?

You should be using one of the AJA supplied Easy Setups, which all use the Apple RT enabled codecs. The codec you are using is for a very specific application, and is not RT enabled

What John says. You can use the Kona with ANY codec that FCP supports. What codec did you capture your footage in?

well its footage thats coming out of Maya so I really have a lot more flexibility to change it. What do you recommend as the best codec to use and still being able to playback on the tv. Thank so much for all your help btw.
