I using Final Cut Studio 2 on a MacPro. Here are the specs:

    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro2,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 8 MB
    Memory: 8 GB
    OS: Tiger 10.4.11

I’ve also got 2, 750GB hard drives in it.

My question is concerning proper system configuration. Are there any general rules that you guys recommend for what to do, or maybe more importantly what NOT to do concerning programs and general setup of the machine?

Also any widely accepted rules about what to run and when, something like “never have compressor going while FCP is exporting,” or “don’t run Photoshop and After Effects at the same time while such and such program is running?” Stuff like that.

I’ve had some issues with FCP crashing on me during export, like if I try to browse a website or do something in another program.

    Any thoughts?

The most important thing is to keep your qt media files on a separate drive from your system.

Yeah, that’s one thing I did know for sure, and have been doing from the beginning. I’ve heard that all hell breaks if the two drives begin to inter-mingle

With your 8gb RAM you’ll be able to search the web and export using Compressor with no problems. Just make sure to turn off the porn sites when your clients come around.

[David Roth Weiss] “Just make sure to turn off the porn sites when your clients come around.”

    Depends on the client! 🙂
