    JPEGs don’t carry transparency. Take the file into Photoshop and remove the white background there.

    Yes, as he said, turn it into a tga, png or tif file, all of those retain alpha channel info. Or go old school and at the top of your menu bar, under “Modify”, scroll down to “compositing modes” and try those out to see how to luminance key the existing graphic. You could also do this in Motion.
