  • Problems with importing from Photoshop – rolling credits and still images

Posted by Dustin Parsons on February 29, 2008 at 2:42 am

I’m trying to import credits that my director made up in Photoshop. The FCP sequence they’re going into is an 720p24, Photoshop file is 960x10000px at 72dpi.

    My method:
    1) Splice image into the timeline
    2) Changing the scale to 100% and the Distort to 0 in the Motion tab.
    3) Use the Motion tab to add the scroll to the image.

    Problems I run into:
    1) When I change the scale and distort in the motion tab the image is sized correctly but it becomes extremely blurry
    2) When I export the rolling credits the image looks compressed while everything else looks like uncompressed HD
    3) The credits do not scroll smoothly, there is a slight jitter as they move

My second problem is with a still image. I imported a still image HERE and when I export it, it comes out looking like THIS.

I can’t figure out why Final Cut would reduce the quality of the images while keeping everything else looking great. As always, any help is appreciated!

Is the codec of your timeline DV by any chance?

    Dustin,

Oh, I see now that indeed you did write that you were working in 720p. In that case, the titles should have been created at 1280×720, but your director seems to have chosen pixel dimensions for the credits without rhyme or reason.

Anytime text created in a graphics app requires scaling inside FCP it will typically be inferior to text that was created at the proper dimensions.

See page 373 in the online manual for a complete explanation.

As far as rolling credits are concerned, getting the speed correct can is always a bit a testy. I use apps like Motion, Livetype or Combustion, which use sub-pixel animation, which is a whole lot smoother.

    Hope this helps,
    David
