Premiere Pro CS4 loss of files and crash
Hi folks,
Hoping somebody on here can help me. I’m a student editing my final project for my Master’s degree and I’ve come up against a pretty large problem that I can’t understand.
I’ve been editing for about 2 months, perfectly happily, no major issues other than a problem transcoding HD footage to SD. Had to use two file formats in the end as no transcoder seemed to want to process half of the footage. Anyway, as a result my project is made up of about half .avi files and half .mp4 files and here begins the problem…
As I’ve said, there had been no major problems editing with these two files in the same project, as you’d expect. However, today Premiere has suddenly “lost” the .mp4 files.
All that remains in their place is a black screen and a horrible, loud, electronic buzzing sound when played in the timeline. It is impossible to drag the .mp4 files from the project list to the editing screen. The .avi files still work fine.
No files have been moved or deleted. The file paths are exactly the same as they have been since day one of the edit.
The troublesome .mp4 files are still listed in the project window on the left of the screen, so I thought it’d simply be a case of right-clicking and re-linking them to the source files. However, the instant the file is right-clicked a dialog box flashes up saying there is a serious error and Premiere needs to close.
Any ideas?
Here are a couple of screen shots of the problem, the troublesome .mp4 files are circled in red in the first shot. The second is of the error message after right clicking the file on the left hand side.

The first thing I would try is creating a new project in a different folder, go to preferences, clear all your media cache, them import the old project into it.

Thanks to you too Todd. Just tried that now but again, it hasn’t worked. Same problem throughout all of the earlier auto-saves.

Perhaps mov the mp4 files to a new folder and relink them when opening the project. It may need to index and conform them all again but that should clear it up.
Have you tried to bring the mp4 clips into a new project? Are you sure they are working in a solo capacity?
If they work on their own moving them to another location on the drive they should reconnect and rebuild ok.

Already tired moving the files to a new location and re-linking them. Seemed to work until it got to the point of selecting the files to re-link them. I then got a dialogue box saying, “The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match the original file’s type (audio and video)”. Can’t understand that problem as nothing should have changed about the original file.
Just tried bringing the MP4s into a new project. That didin’t work. They weren’t being recognised correctly. They imported but the usual audio/video icon did not appear next to the file name in the project window. When moved to the edit window all it did was play a blank, black screen. Interestingly there is no option when in the edit window to drag audio on to the timeline. Looks like somehow the files have lost audio and any visual is now simply a black screen as opposed to the documentary footage that should be there.

Is it possible there was an update run on your QuickTime. Apple sometimes can run an update and you may not have noticed it.
What version of QT does it state in about?

Somebody else suggested the QT issue on the Adobe forums yesterday. Tried it. Old versions, new ones, didn’t make any difference. Tried 7.7.7, 7.6.6. and 7.5.5. None changed anything.
The files on their own play fine in QT and in Windows Media Player, Pr just seems to fail on them.

If you upload one of the problematic files to a place where I can grab it, I’ll see if I can import it.
