Premiere Pro CS4 loss of files and crash

One of the first things I tried when it happened. There weren’t any new ones. Just checked again. Nothing new to update.

Worth trying an uninstall/reinstall? Will I lose my projects if I do?

I don’t know that it will help, but it can’t hurt. As long as you’ve saved your projects, uninstalling and reinstalling the application shouldn’t affect them.

Worth a bash I think. I’ll give it a go this evening. Will back up the project on my external hard drive first just to be sure! haha. My trust in Pr has taken a big hit through all this, would rather be super safe.

I can understand that. But I’ll counter by suggesting that it’s your faith in Premiere Pro _CS4_ that should be taking the hit. Stability and handling of MPEG-4-based codecs has improved a lot in Premiere Pro CS5.

Of course, that doesn’t help you with your current predicament, so I’ll stop sounding like a salesperson now. 😉

Haha very true. Either way, I still like it more than AVID. That thing is a pig.

Anyway, after all that it turns out the reinstall did the trick! 🙂 Delighted, but also feel a bit stupid and bad for getting everyone scratching their heads :s Kicking myself really as it should have been something I did right away after a reboot and a check for updates.

Must have been the latest Adobe update that did it, the 4.0.0 version works fine with these mp4s.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help. It was a simple solution in the end but I really do appreciate your input.

Will be back again when something else goes wrong haha.

I’ll agree with the gentleman from Adobe that CS5 does much better with MP4 files. My Sony EX3 files were causing CS4 to simply stop on a regular basis.

A second note and no one mentioned it so it may not be relevant, but I’ve had CODEC updates cause me problems. I have DIVX on my editing computer and one update caused me about an hour’s grief before I discovered it had changed some type recognitions. The use of GSpot can be helpful. https://www.headbands.com/gspot/
