panasonic and 24pA with IO
Posted by Doug Bassett on November 6, 2008 at 10:23 pmWe are shooting with the Panasonic HDX900 in 108024pA. We would like to use the IO in our workflow but can’t get an answer to wether we can get the pull down via fcp or the IO. Per haps we can use the 24p mode instead of “24pA” (advanced pulldown)
IS anyone using panasonic, 24p and the IO and successfully getting pulldown?Jeremy Garchow replied 17 years, 6 months ago 3 Members · 13 Replies -

November 7, 2008 at 1:54 amYou cannot remove 1080p24A pulldown over HDSDI. You can only do it via firewire.
You can then use the ioHD to monitor your footage and make downconverted dubs if need be.

November 7, 2008 at 2:41 amI guess what I am wondering is can we capture 24p live using the IOHD from an HDX900, similar to the way you would capture 24p using 1080PSF on a Decklink or Kona3 even though you would go HDSDI thru the IO out via fw800 to a computer?
Our Camera method would be 108024p (not “A”), and our easy setup would be AJA IOHD 1080psf.
I’m just not sure what happens at the mid point with the IO. Does it function as a BlackMagic or Kona card with the exception of hardware pro res encoding? -

November 7, 2008 at 4:33 amWait, are you trying to do a live capture or are you talking about capturing from tape later?

November 7, 2008 at 5:38 amBoth. We usually live capture but run tape for back up purposes.

November 7, 2008 at 9:26 pmHey Doug, sorry about the delay. It’s been crazy today.
I did look up that camera and you can’t get 1080 psf 23.98 out of the SDI. But what you can do is record 1080 24p (29.97 with 3:2 pulldown) or 1080 24pA (29.97 with 2:3:3:2 pulldown) and use the HD1400 deck to remove hte pulldown and send 1080psf23.98 video out of the HDSDI of the deck which the AJA ioHD can then capture as 1080psf23.98 ProRes or HQ.
Make sense?

November 8, 2008 at 4:42 amThanks, We are trying to eliminate the the deck portion for capture due to noise wear and tear and many other usage issues.
Here is our current config which we want to change.
HDX900 set to 108024pA out fw400 to Macbook Pro capturing DVCPRoHD with 2:3:3:2 pulldown to FCP.
The same HDX900 out HDSDI thru a AJ-HD1400 to another Macbook Pro for compositing reference with Conduit live. -

November 8, 2008 at 4:50 amSorry Doug, you won’t be able to remove pulldown on a live captue with that camera using the ioHD or nay other capture device accept for native fw400 captures.

November 8, 2008 at 4:23 pmThanks Jeremy. Do you know of hand if it can be done with the 2000 or 3000?

November 8, 2008 at 4:44 pmBoth of those cameras in AVCIntra mode can record AVC-i 1080psf23.98 Native to the p2 cards (which is 10bit recording), but they do not output 1080psf out of the HD SDI. Why? I don’t know and it’s very strange. I imagine that it has to do with the chip constantly running @ ~60Hz.
An alternative for you is to shoot adn record 720p23.98 and do a cross convert to 1080psf23.98 on output with the ioHD. The ioHD will remove redundant frames on the fly in 720p mode and the cross convert looks fantastic.
