  PAL Monitor Calibrating

  I’m calibrating my PAL monitor using downloaded EBU color bars instead of the bars provided by final cut pro. I’ve managed to find a rule of thumb method for calibrating the bars on the net as below

  “Ideally you want plain EBU bars – 100% white or 75% (with 100% saturation). The routine is, ideally, with minimum contrast set the black bar to just black using the brightness, then wind up the contrast so the peak white is right. With saturation turned down you should see an even step of greys (the FCP greyscale is OK for this). Usually you have to compensate with the brightness as you turn up the contrast – most sets seem to have an interplay between the two (which they shouldn’t, speaking as a purist).

  Then either wind up the saturation until the color is ‘right’ or, with only the blue gun switched on, balance the ‘brightness’ of the blue bars.”

  Any other instruction I’ve found is for NTSC calibration. Is there a more detailed procedure to do this or would the above advise be sufficient? Would really appreciate any help as I want to have an accurate idea of the video.

  editing on emac final cut pro, and sony PVM -14L1 composite monitor, footage shot on canon XM1.
