P2 Woes Spanned cards come in black
Posted by Warren Eig on November 30, 2008 at 5:25 pmI did a little searching and couldn’t find anything in the past posts.
I’m posting a show shot on two HPX-500s. The AC’s let the cards span during recording. When I go to Log and Transfer in Final Cut Pro, the clips show up. They are marked spanned. I can play them in the L&T window, but once they are imported, the head of the shot plays but the rest of the clip is black. Some of the shots are 20 plus minutes long.
Is there a way to pre-join the clips before import so I have the whole shot?

November 30, 2008 at 7:22 pmWhen you have a spanned clip, you need to have both P2 Volumes containing the parts of the clip mounted during log and transfer.
Final Cut Pro 6.0.5, Mac OS-X 10.5.5, Quicktime 7.5.5, Adobe Prod Prem CS4, G5 Quad 2.5, Kona-LHe V6, 8.5GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7800-GT 256MB, G-RAID 2x1TB FW800, 6TB RAID-5 (Enhance E8-ML, Highpoint 2322), Panasonic HVX-200P P2. Also MBP 17″ Core 2 Duo 2.5, 4GB, GeForce 8600M GT 512MB.

November 30, 2008 at 7:35 pmI have all the info mounted. Everything was offloaded to a FW800 Drive by a DIT keeping the card structures in tact. They play fine in FCP’s L&T window but when add selection to Que and import they are coming in black half way through the clip.

November 30, 2008 at 8:17 pmhey Warren-
check this out:
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/980738might be that even though you have all the P2 media stored on a single
FW800 drive, you are not loading all the individual folders which contain the spanned clips when you L&T?try working with only one spanned clip at a time, and not multiple.
make sure you have selected just the individual folders containing
the spanned clips and not the entire volume.perhaps your clips are damaged and will need to be repaired using the
camera that created them.just some more thoughts…

November 30, 2008 at 9:58 pmDo you have any demo p2 software on your machine that’s expired or not registered? Are they black when you open them in quicktime, or just FCP?

December 1, 2008 at 4:20 pmProblem solved. It is something unique on my system– I’ll have to tear it apart to figure out what. Went over to a friends workstation and it saw the five files I was having trouble with fine. We L&T’d them and all is well. For some reason my system just didn’t like those 5 clips.

December 2, 2008 at 1:32 amlike I said, never had demo P2 software. Just have P2 CMS and the P2 mac driver. Spoke to Jan Crittenden suggested I start by removing all third party plugins. Most likely a plugin conflict.
No demo software insalled here.

December 2, 2008 at 2:33 amWhat version of P2CMS? If you can (and don’t mind) please take and post a screen grab of your HD > Library > Quicktime folder.
Thanks,
Jeremy

I’m using 1.3.9 of P2 CMS. Here is a screen shot of my Quicktime older in my library.

December 2, 2008 at 5:12 pmOkay, a couple of things.
First, thanks for posting.
Second, do you have Perian or FXFactory installed? If so, remove perian and update fxfactory.
Third, see how there’s two DVCPro HD codecs? The one marked ‘PanasonicDVCProHD….’ quit FCP and try taking that one out (what I do is make a folder called Quicktime_disabled and place it in the same Library folder and drag the component into the disabled folder). Restart the machine and try the log and transfer again. This is just a guess, but let’s check it out.
