August 3, 2008 at 12:26 pm[Devin Crane] “I’m sorry if you are scared, if you need someone to hold your hand the next time you go through the airport call me. This kind of stuff has been happening for years, big brother has been watching all along. You know what, I’m not going to get freaked out about it because I have nothing to hide, maybe you do”
Being scared or having something to hide is completely irrelevant and misses the point completely. The Bush Administration has created a culture of “Us against Them” and you’re following the script to a T. If someone questions any security measures, then “You might have something to hide” or things of that nature.
The point is that with absolutely zero reason at all, your laptop could be seized the next time you travel and held for a “reasonable amount of time.” So if you are an editor heading to a four day even in the Caribbean to edit a typical corporate incentive trip event where you’ll be cutting daily “fun in the sun” videos and the government decides to seize and hold your laptop at the airport, what do you do? You’re out of a job unless they hand the laptop back.
David is not scared of big brother as I don’t think you would find any of the leaders on this forum scared of big brother. We’re just disgusted with the abuses to civil liberties in the United States under the umbrella of “terrorist protection.”
I’m on an FBI watch list, have been for over two years. The reason? We edited a series for Al Jazeera International. One of the most free and forward thinking news organizations I’ve actually worked with. Those guys were pretty cool and I interfaced with the Washington D.C. bureau. Whoops, did I say that publicly? Al Jazeera is in Washington, D.C. in the heart of downtown. Wow, that’s going to scare a LOT of people now.
Better get homeland security to surround that building any minute now because everyone in that building used to work for MSNBC, CNN, Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC and AP. Check every laptop because I’m sure there are detailed diagrams of all the important buildings in Washington DC in full 3D renderings.

August 3, 2008 at 2:17 pmLook I don’t think it’s right either that they can take your laptop at will and I think it should be overruled. I just don’t think most people have anything to worry about, obviously Walter if I were you I wouldn’t be taking my laptop out of the country if your working with Al Jezeera. They may be open minded and easy to work with, but they’re also a large Propaganda machine against our country. If you don’t think so that’s being naive.

Absolutely not. In fact if you know anything about AJI they are actually hated by most governments in the Middle East and surrounding areas. Why? Because they are a completely independent and autonomous news organization. A rarity in a region with government controlled media. Kind of like Fox News here in the U.S.
Obviously you believe everything the Bush Administration and Fox News tells you to believe. I’m an independent thinker and can see things for what they are, not what the government or Fox News tells me to believe. A difference of opinion, but there is one thing that is great about this country. We can have a difference of opinion and not be jailed for it, like say in China….
Oh and if the FBI is watching this thread, I’m voting for Obama. I’m sure that’s good for some sort of a watch list…….

August 3, 2008 at 2:45 pmMany adopt the argument that “I have nothing to hide, so why not let the government intrude?”.
The problem is ideological exclusion. People with ideas that disagree with the policing agency have their voices silenced. Since we all work in the area of intellectual property creation, this should be a concern, as new ideas are the lifeblood of this business / artistic pursuit.
“We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.” — John F. Kennedy

August 3, 2008 at 3:12 pmOh and NBC isn’t biased? Last week John Edwards gets caught with his mistress and none of the liberal media covers it. I guarantee you if that was a republican everyone even Fox would be all over it. Yeah that’s open thinking. And NBC, CBS, even ABC all have their own personal special interests at heart that they get across everyweek. You should know being and editor that the News can’t be trusted just as much as the Gov. A Month ago the Gov hauled tons of Uranium out of Iraq, but I thought there weren’t any weapons of mass destruction. Hmm maybe there wasn’t but at least they had the ability and motive to. Why didn’t NBC broadcast that?

August 3, 2008 at 3:39 pmThe real problem as we’re finding out is that a million names is impossible to manage. There are constant screw ups. Or is the list just a screw up?
All the best,

There you go again Devin. Just because most individuals have reasonably good odds at avoiding an unreasonable seizure makes unreasonable seizure no more tolerable.
Civil liberties under the laws of the U.S. Constitution weren’t designed to be about playing the odds like a good game of poker.
