Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy OT: Your laptop can be detained by DNS

[David Roth Weiss] “There you go again Devin. Just because most individuals have reasonably good odds at avoiding an unreasonable seizure makes unreasonable seizure no more tolerable.

Yep, I got nothing to hide but if my laptop is taken away for several days and I’m supposed to be editing with that laptop tomorrow, well now I’m out of money. Nothing to hide and no money to make all in the name of “protection.”

[Devin Crane] “Oh and NBC isn’t biased? Last week John Edwards gets caught with his mistress and none of the liberal media covers it”

So far as I can see, the story broke on the National Enquirer and Fox has picked it up. Since I used to work at CNN (5 years) and I don’t see it on their website either, that network has not been able to get at least two credible sources to back up the story. If they can’t get two credible sources (they would probably want at least three for a story like this) then they cannot verify the story and won’t run it. I would guess ABC, CBS and NBC have had the same issue.

That’s actually how journalism is supposed to work. Ask questions first, run the story after it is verified. If the other networks can verify the story, you’ll definitely see it appear.

Quite honestly, I’m done with this thread as I’ve said just about all I need to say about the subject. Those of you traveling with your laptops to a gig, just beware. Can’t be long before laptops on any trip to anyplace in and around the U.S. will be subject to seizure for any whim of the TSA.

Government and Media have one thing in common, they are human both don’t trust each other and neither can be fully trusted. One thing is evident though, we have an enemy, and if given the chance they would do whatever they can to get in this country and destroy our freedom. Call me naive or what ever you want but when it comes to fighting them there are times we need to take off the boxing gloves when they are coming at us with sledge hammers. Do I agree with everything that the Gov or this administration does, NO. But at the same time I do believe when it comes to securing our borders they are doing the best they know how to do with the resource given to them.

This kind of naivety in government and “security” is what has let us to these absurd positions, seizing laptops and million name lists. Nations are not secured at their borders. To believe they can be is foolishness from the 19th century. This is the Maginot Line mentality. Too much money is being wasted on stupidities like these that do more to undermine our freedom than hinder an enemy who has done no damage to our freedom, except what we in consequence have inflicted on ourselves in the name of protecting it.

But as Walter has said this has gone beyond the scope of the forum. The thread should really be shut down, or better still removed.

    All the best,

    Tom

    Franklin said it right:

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

[Devin Crane] “obviously Walter if I were you I wouldn’t be taking my laptop out of the country if your working with Al Jezeera. They may be open minded and easy to work with, but they’re also a large Propaganda machine against our country.”

When Al Jazeera decided to setup an english news network, the employed a former TVNZ news producer to run it. As a result lots of NZ editors ended up working for AJ. I’ve not heard a single bad thing about them as an employer or news organisation from anyone I’ve spoken too (a handful or so).

We don’t have full coverage here, but it’s carried on one of the ‘regional’ channels in downtime, so 8 hours a day or so in wee hours. The stuff I’ve seen feels a lot like BBC news to me.

Yep, BBC and PBS are what Al Jazeera International are like. I can only see them via their internet feed. All of their specs come directly from the BBC as just about all of their engineers are former BBC. Just about all of their Washington staff is CNN, BBC, MSNBC, Fox and AP.

Actually Tom, in the interest of accuracy, Walter said *he* was done with this thread, before he went on to post twice more afterwards. 🙂 He never said this has gone beyond the scope of this forum (he’s the one who brought it up! And he posted it as an OT). Why would you remove it? Don’t read or respond if you don’t want to. It may be OT to a point, but it affects many of us who travel overseas for video work with our laptops.
    Ed (my humble opinion)

Wow, this is a fantastic tread.

I wish more europeans knew that the liberal, sensible american still exists.

In scandinavia, where I live, americans have always been held in the highest regard.

Not so anymore. Europeans are turning more and more cold towards the US every day, you can blame your POTUS and his henchmen for that.

We are fascinated over here by the way that most americans silently accepted their freedom being removed.

    You were once our inspiration!

But theres hope isnt there? :

Did you guys see the images of Obama in Berlin?

Fantastic footage! Berlin havent seen such fantastic greetings of an american since JFK

Hope things will change – we would love to se our long, loyal ally ( USA ) back on track!

Oh what the heck… I’m not quite done with it.

It’s not just laptops. It is, ‘computers, disks, hard drives, and other
electronic or digital storage devices’ which would include you iPod, and I suspect would include your video tapes and the like as well.

And it’s not just terrorism, it can be executed as a random search looking for evidence related to ‘terrorism, narcotics smuggling, and other national security matters; alien admissibility; contraband including child pornography, monetary instruments, and information in violation of copyright or trademark laws; and evidence of embargo violations or other import or export control laws’

Been in Mexico shooting a story about families of illegal immigrants? That’d make you a prime target.

In general – it’s just the power for random searches. There is absolutely no requirement at all for reasonable suspicion. They can keep the item as long as required to conduct a search, on-site or off-site, with the assistance of other Federal agencies if necessary for things like translation and decryption.

Coming back from Iraq? Got FCP on your computer? You’ve broken export-control laws by taking it there in the first place (I’ve wondered for a while how news networks get away with that).
