What a reassuringly ‘normal’ political attitude on display here. Unlike some of the other US-centric forums I participate it.

There’s a sane middleground in there somewhere and I’m sure the US government and citizens will figure it out at some point. But from the outside a bunch of stuff seems to be tilting absurdly toward the ‘guilty until proven innocent’ thing.

Bingo. Of course the “seems to be” thing went out the window a long time ago. It absolutely IS “guilty until proven innocent” with the current government of the U.S.

Along with “grease the wallets of our buddies.”

Rather ironic how many freedoms must be given up in order to travel through the “land of the free”

On the other hand, the last work trip I took to the States was no trouble at all, even with my laptop bag full of cables, hardrives, ENG kit, deck, random electronic devices, so on…
I had more trouble getting back through Canadian customs!?! Perhaps a little power envy at Canada Customs!

[Devin Crane] “but unless your name shows up on the terrorist list I highly doubt that’s going to happen”

Do you have any idea how many names are on that list? Have you heard the story of a lady named Cathy Stevens? She was held up at an airport because singer/songwriter (and Muslim convert) Cat Stevens is on the list.

According to news reports there are currently over one million names on the list.

    All the best,

That’s not a lot considering there are 280 million in the US and most of the names that are on the list live outside of the US and that count is what 7 billion. I have nothing to hide, I’m not going to fear them taking anything. The moment I do is when they take it away. If your last name is Bin Laden then I would probably back everything up and carry the footage on tape and give it to your production assistant.

Oh my goodness the sky is falling!

    Devin,

    You are naive.

Sometimes we think we can make ourselves safer my making ourselves less free. But, it doesn’t work. When you make yourself less free you’re not any safer, you’re just less free.

    David,

I’m sorry if you are scared, if you need someone to hold your hand the next time you go through the airport call me. This kind of stuff has been happening for years, big brother has been watching all along. You know what, I’m not going to get freaked out about it because I have nothing to hide, maybe you do. After 9/11 I got frisked a handful of times, great, if they had done that on 9/11 the twin towers would be here this day. People got lazy and complacent and didn’t think anything would ever happen to them. Well we found out there are some people half way across the world that if given the chance would kill everyone of us.

If anyone on this forum ever gets their computer commandeered email me and then I will believe. Until then forget about it, unless you actually have something to hide. Then don’t go to the airport. Don’t go to DMV either, I had a warrant from back in my teenage years, turned around after getting my license renewed and Mrs Texas State Trooper hauled me off to jail.

You’ve completely missed the point Devin.

When Thomas Jeffereson wrote “We the people,” he wasn’t talking about the freedoms of just you, or me, he understood that that the rights of individuals could only be protected by protecting the rights of everyone. If one person’s laptop is unjustly confiscated, who’s laptop is next? You can’t just let down your guard because the odds are in your favor.

Okay, enough of this, I’m done, back to FCP.

I’m not scared. I myself would rather die than live in a country like China, for example. I generally consider “Security Moms” such as yourself to be the scared ones.
