This problem seems to be systemic since it affects MPEG Streamclip as well.

Its seems systemic.

But basically being a positive person the silver lining is this…

I am now using MP4 H.264 which encodes at twice the speed of its QT sibling. And on the HP Z820 thats screaming.And QT player can play it.Its encodes are clean and small files.

And OP1a which is a mastering standard for many European countries is based on Sony’s XDCam codec and can be played by VLC Player which is free. And it encodes about twice as fast as DNxHD or Proress due to the fact it isnt QT based and reliant of the qt32server bottleneck.For personal archiving it will work.

The fact that MPEG Streamclip can’t encode either suggests to me that it’s a QuickTime problem.

Have you tried re-installing QuickTime?

As an aside, I much prefer encoding to H.264 .MP4 files. It’s much faster to encode, and well-supported on both Macs and PCs.

As a matter of fact Walter. I have un and re installed 7.72. And then did the same for 7.6. Encodes still failed.

Yup. And in extensive testing with Mark from Adobe, we discovered that MPEG Streamclip suffered the same failure as PrP, AE and AME. This suggests that the issue is more systemic and not just related to Adobe software.

Macs aren’t immune. Among others, I’ve been bit by such classics as the iTunes update that broke AE renders longer than 10 minutes and the 10.6.8 update that wouldn’t boot with an NVIDIA Quadro 4000 installed.

I’ve had enough bizarro errors on my Macs over the years that I’ve come to think of stuff like this as computer issues, not Mac/PC issues.

The best advice for dealing with stuff like this is cross-platform: get a good working system configuration, clone your startup disk, and stick it in a little glass case labeled “Break in case of emergency.” When something like this breaks, I prefer to just boot up from my backup disk and be up and running in minutes instead of hours or days.

I’m neurotic, so I actually re-image my disk after big updates and keep a couple versions back.
