  • No video in viewer and only freeze frame in canvas

Posted by Devra Ashby on November 7, 2008 at 5:55 pm

When I try to play my timeline, all I see in the canvas is a freeze frame from the point where I started. When I stop playing the timeline, the video in the canvas updates to a freeze frame at the point I’m at. But at no time do I see moving video. I hear the audio but no moving video. Also, when I double click the clip to show in my Viewer, I get nothing but black. So I’ve opened the audio tabs (mono a1 and a2) in the viewer and get the audio waveforms, then I’ll click back to the viewer video tab and it shows the audio waveforms in the video viewer tab.

I’ve restarted, shut down, and unplugged my computer. I’ve trashed my FCP preferences, and I’ve done a software update. All have not done a thing to help the problem. My files are fine when I preview them in finder. I’m stumped…never have had a problem like this with FCP. Any ideas?

What hard drive are you using for your media? What kind of media-codec, frame rate, etc.? What are the Sequence Settings and do they match the media? How are you monitoring the edit?

I’m using a Mac OS Extended hard drive with 234GB of space. I don’t know the codec Final Cut is using but we are using P2 and MiniDV media, DV-NTSC. The sequence settings are: 720X480, NTSC (3:2), 29.97.

What I do know is it worked one day, and didn’t work the next and I didn’t change anything.

If you don’t know the codec you’re using then you can’t fix the problem. The codec is listed right in your Browser or in your Item Prefs.

A frozen canvas means your Sequence doesn’t match your Easy Setup.

Just change the Easy Setup to the proper setup based on the codec of your original footage.

It’s not just the frozen canvas, it’s the fact that I don’t see video in the viewer either. I never changed my settings. My sequence and my media are both DV NTSC. Can FCP just change settings on its own?

[Devra Ashby] “it’s the fact that I don’t see video in the viewer either.”

Is the Viewer set up for WireFrame only?

That’s another strange thing. When I select image+wireframe, I get a still frame in the viewer of the video but it still won’t play. When I go back to image only, it just goes to black or gray.

I am having a similar problem with my FCP, when i use my preview monitor (view–>video playback–>cinema desktop fullscreen) the preview monitor is all white where my video should be yet the audio still plays and im seeing the playhead moving down the timeline. when i use my tv as the preview monitor (view–>video playback–>apple firewire NTSC 720×480) everything plays back fine no problems. I thought that this could be a problem with the resolution of the monitor but i have played back in the past on this monitor with no problems. but one day it just stoped when i was doing something with muilticlips, and also when using the computer screen as a preview monitor (view–>video playback–>cinema desktop fullscreen) when the screen comes up all white i go to view–>external video, i make sure that this is set to all frames, which it is and then if i click on show current, ansd the video will appear, but once i play the clip the screen goes to white and thats all i see, but i still hear the audio and the playhead moves in the timeline until i stop it and then it stays white until i once again go to show current.

    Tyrell,

Sorry to hear about your troubles too. I had this same problem at my former place of employment (with the monitor). I think my current issue is due to a really old and corrupt computer. Good thing I have a brand new G5 that I am currently in the process of switching to.

I hope you get your problem figured out and if I discover anything I’ll let you know.

    Devra
