  • No media drives available, you can only import shot logs.

    Hi All,

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, and upon opening my avid system, I tried to import a clip when I got the message “No media drives available, you can only import shot logs.” I don’t know how or why this is happening, I can only import when I have my external turned on. For whatever reason avid is not recognizing my Macintosh HD as a media drive. This has never happened before.

Well, you shouldn’t use your system drive as your media drive. Avid defaults to filtering out the system drive for this reason. If you go to your Media Creation settings you have to uncheck “Filter System Drive” in order for Avid to see your system drive. Check that and see if Avid will let you use it for a media drive.

Or it’s because you upgraded to Snow Leopard, which is an unapproved OS and may have broken something.

Let us know if this works.

Well I received help earlier and it turned out to be some sort of permissions “read and write” issue. Thanks for the suggestion though. And yes I went to the media creation and that button was unchecked. Do you know what most people use as their default media drive if not the Macintosh HD. I only have one HD on my imac. I’m not doing professional stuff quite yes, as I am still in school. I was thinking of buying a 500 gb or 1 tb external to use as my default. What do you think of that idea, and if you have other suggestions please let me know.

    Thanks again

I’d use an external drive. And thanks for posting that it was a read/write permissions error–if anyone turns up this thread in the future with the same problem they’ll have the answer! Glad you got it sorted out.

    Brendan,

It’s always best to have your media on an external drive. You can plug in a FW800 drive to your iMac and get good results.

A couple suggestions about drives. Don’t just buy an external HDD from a big box store and expect a device that will hold up to the demands of video editing. https://www.caldigit.com/products.asp has some good products. You can look at the “Ideal for” column to find a drive that fits your needs. Another company that has good video drives is https://www.g-technology.com/products/products.cfm?interest=all You can click on the “Video” icon and find the best drives.

There are several online stores that have good prices for both of these brands.

    Hope that helps.

    Ed

    Hi Brendan,

I’m experiencing exactly the same problem as you described in this post. Could you please explain how the read and write issue was solved.

    Thanks a lot.

Well in my situation I believe it was a read/write issue, in which case I went to my applications>avid media composer and went to “get info.” I then went down to sharing and permissions and switched the privilege to “read and write under my name.” This is my personal computer I’m not sure what you’re working off of. But that was my situation, hopefully that helps.

I have tried everything suggested here and I still get the message and am unable to import. Can anyone help?

    Hi all,

I have the same problem, I tried to import media and the message was “No media drives available, you can only import shot logs”.

I allways use a second drive but I don’t have a secondary drive right now. I only have one partition on my mac and it isn’t impossible to import anything.

I tried to check “Filter System Drive” and uncheck but it didn’t work, any suggestion to my problem?

    thanks all!

Well I was having the same problem. When I didn’t have my external functioning as the main media drive I got that annoying message “can only import shot logs.” With only one partition I had to change the read/write permissions, that may be your problem.
