  • No audio with .MOV files – and it was there before!

Posted by Patrick Entwisle on November 12, 2009 at 3:17 am

I edited an entire project and everything was fine, but now when I load it there is no audio for the .mov files. The video is there, but the audio just shows “Media Offline.”

Obviously, I can’t just re-encode the files and replace them because the project is already finished! Audio for other files shows up fine in the timeline. This is only affecting Quicktime files. The audio for the Quicktime files also works fine in the Quicktime player. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Quicktime player.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    I’m using:

    Sony Vegas Pro 8.0b

Audio codecs for the Quicktime files are:
    MPEG-4 AAC LC

That has caused problems in Pro 9.

Thanks for the speedy response, Bob.

And yes, Quicktime is up to date with the latest version, 7.6.4 and I am using pro.

That could well be your problem.

“That could well be your problem.”

Not could, it IS the problem.
If you updated iTunes recently, it also installed the newest version of QuickTime and this caused all kinds of grief to Vegas owners.
It finally got fixed with the latest release of Vegas Pro 9.0c.
Since Patrick is still on 8.0b, the only solution is to uninstall QT7.6.4 and install QT 7.6.2.
    QuickTime 7.6.2 for Windows: QuickTimeInstaller.exe
The drawback is that this will mess up iTunes 🙁

BTW Patrick, there is an 8.0c update that I recommend installing.

Bob, I have a favour to ask of you.
Please don’t change the original poster’s subject line as it can make it tougher to follow the thread as well as for anyone trying to search for a solution to the same problem.
    Thanks a lot.

Yes, returning to the previous version of Quicktime seems to have fixed the problem.

Here are the steps I followed:

    1. Uninstalled Quicktime 7.6.4

    2. Rebooted

    3. Downloaded/installed Quicktime 7.6.2

    4. Rebooted

Everything works fine now. Thanks Mike and Bob for your quick responses.

I am having the same problem. Unfortunately, I don’t have a standalone version of Quicktime, but rather it’s latched on to iTunes. Is there anything I can do about it? I don’t think rolling back iTunes is an option since I have an iPhone 3Gs and I’m not sure the older version works with it.

    Ryan,

Try uninstalling both programs then reinstall each separately. Make sure you install Quicktime version 7.6.2 though (see Mike’s link). I tried to install an older version before but it didn’t fix the problem.

When installing the older version of QT, how does it affect your iTunes?

“When installing the older version of QT, how does it affect your iTunes?”

If you’re running the latest version of iTunes, it will make it unusable and you’ll need to go back to an older version (if this is even possible).
Having said that, the Pro 9.0c update cured this issue.
I recently updated my iTunes and am running the latest version of QuickTime and Vegas is now OK with it.
