Hello, I posted the following thread earlier yet some new problems have arisen. I recopied the previously posted material to give a background of the situation.

“My problem is with “offline media”. With the exception of a few files, almost all of my media is “offline”; however, I’m still connected to the same hard drive, opened the same sequence etc. The preferences are still set to the same location. When I search for the files, and then go to reconnect them, I’m getting the message… “Some attributes of one or more of the files you have chosen do not match the attributes of the original. This may cause problems within the sequences that are dependent on them. The attributes that differed are as follows: -Media Start and End. Would you like to try to connect them again?”… First off, I don’t want to create a bigger problem for myself, should I go ahead a reconnect these files—if possible—and disregard the warning, or is there a better fix? In general I’m looking for any advice I can get on this, I’ve been working on this project for about 5 months, and it would be a horrible tragedy to loose it. There are a few more details I can give you. I noticed that inside of my capture scratch folder, there is another empty capture scratch folder along with an empty render files and audio render files folder—do you think this could be related to my problem? Also, I have 4 deferent sequences with this project, all variations of the same thing; however, in my capture scratch folder I noticed that each sequence folder contains different files: For instance, sequence one has day1 day 2 day 3, where as sequence 2 has day4 day5 day6. Now I haven’t changed anything since I started the project and don’t know if it’s been like this all along. I thought, though, that as long as it was the same project the files could be read regardless of what folder they are included under in capture scratch. Does this make any sense?”

    Here is the new problem:

Another problem has arisen with my issue. I ignored the warning as suggest; however now the clips in the timeline won’t render. They rendered once when I used the render what’s needed option, but after saving shutting down, and starting back up they were not rendered. Also, it seems some of the clips are now stuck almost like still frames. When I scroll through with the arrow keys are simply place the play head over a certain part of the clip the image stays the same. This is a disaster, any advice anyone?
    Thanks for your time.

    It’s actually fcp 5.0.4.

Sounds like you have major disc io issues.

DO me a favor and quit your FCP project.

Then right click on the FCP allication itself and choose ‘show package contents’. Once inside that folder, do a search for ‘render files’, only in that folder.

    Jeremy,
Thanks again for the response. So, there are no render files in that folder. Hmmm. What exactly does this mean? What are disc IO issues?

It just seems that you have some corruption somewhere. If FCP can’t keep track of your media, something sounds wrong with your media hard drive unless you have done something to it that you aren’t telling us like rename it or something weird.

No, I have no renamed it. Is it possible the media files themselves could be corrupt? I clicked on some of the quicktime media files and some gave me the message that “the movie could not be opened”; however, some opened fine: Both of which are offline. Should I try moving the project to my desktop from my external?

[Chris Kellam] “I clicked on some of the quicktime media files and some gave me the message that “the movie could not be opened””

Are they reference movies and not self contained movies? Are they all exports or captures?

Something is wrong with your media. If you deleted your render files and had a bunch of reference exports, the movies are no good as the media they reference is no longer there.

    Make sense?

All of the files were captures “capture now”. I didn’t delete any render files that I know of. The render file folder on my external hard drive is still full of files. I noticed this time as I opened the project it was still rendered. When I go to reconnect media it tells me the only files that are off line is the l-2drive, which is the name of my hard drive. But, everything seems to open fine in my hard dive that does not pertain to final cut. The settings are still set to the hard drive. Any thoughts on this?

    Sorry, Chris. I don’t follow.

Well, I think part of the issue here is that it’s difficult for me to put into words what I am seeing, without confusing the reader. I guess this is what I should of asked: what are some possible causes of not being able to reconnect media files to a sequence, disregarding the common possibilities like not having your scratch drive set right. So, I guess I’ll go back and start with that question here. Thanks again. And I always look forward to your responses.
