The PC that I test software on is so loaded with crap, weird codecs, hundreds of unrelated programs, multiple versions of just about everything. And it just keeps working. I wish I could replicate the experience for others, but all I can say is that I always follow the Windows updates with a driver version review. (Sometimes they are linked, but nether party tells the users). I never run Norton *anything*. And the only games on this PC are solitaire games that come with Windows.
My main production PC is a BYO, and only has Vegas and DVDA installed, plus BCC8, NBT and Sapphire Edge plugins. No Photoshop, no MS Office programs, and other than an nVidia driver problem early on, no problems.

May 6, 2012 at 10:06 pmStephen,
My main computer is also a BYO, but then so is my test one. I have Vegas 11 64 bit, no 32 bit, Newblue audio essentials and equalizers, video essentials 1-4, titler, iZotope RX, Vegasaur, and some others I can’t remember. I DON’T browse with it. I also have Photoshop and AE. I carefully select updates for windows. No Office, Outlook, no Norton or Nero either. This computer has a single purpose. I always put the same brand video card as the mother board, MB related drivers are up to date, video card is (usually) updated about 2 weeks after Nvidia thinks I need one. I don’t install the Nvidia 3d drivers. And most of all – NO GAMES. I don’t think that’s too much to ask if your business depends on it. People here will spend 500 bucks on a video card, why not go to Walmart and get an Emachine for $300 that they can put all their shareware and internet junk on?
Like I have said, I am really glad not to be crashing all the time. But I am sure, that for some people it is in part about the choices they make in how they use their editing computer. Engineers who put $8000 worth of CAD software on a box probably don’t install first person shooter games alongside it.
I’m not discounting the problems Sony has been through in the moves to 64 bit and to OFX. But I am saying that people need to be practical in how they use their tools.
Just my rant,
Jeff

May 6, 2012 at 11:47 pmSad but true Steve. For whatever reason, Sony has really dropped the ball on this release and I don’t know if they will ever be able to catch up.
