new Blackmagic equipment – pre NAB (Feb 6 2017)
Posted by Bob Zelin on February 6, 2017 at 10:38 pmJust saw the Blackmagic keynote that was on today at 3:00.
Why wait for NAB – how relevant is NAB, when you can present live on the web, pre trade show.Amazing new dirt cheap products, that I outlined on the Creative Cow Blackmagic forum. I am telling you –
soon Blackmagic will be paying us to take their products. I have no idea of how other companies will compete against
these low prices.Bob Zelin

February 7, 2017 at 12:01 ammy favorite was the Web Presenter for $495 (and $85 for the “confidence monitor” on the front).
Please tell me exactly what Newtek or anyone else now has to offer (yes, Newtek has incredible virtual sets, and has for some time) – but for a simple system for live streaming your show – using simple stuff like YouTube or Skype –
I mean, if this is not a “no brainer” than I don’t know what is. Set up a free account, spend $495, plug in whatever you own (like your GoPro camera, or super hi end camera, or production truck) and you are on the internet. No biggie.
This should put half the companies on the “upper south hall” out of business over night (if this product actually works).Bob Zelin

February 7, 2017 at 10:17 amToday the ISE starts in Amsterdam. So I assume that this was the reason for yesterday’s press conference.

The second half of that sentence has always been the hard part to bank on. Like being in love. I’ve had infatuations with BMD and AJA before; been amazed by both and let down by both too. Now I’m going to wait and see how well they deliver, before sticking my neck out at the office to insist we “MUST get one TODAY”.

February 10, 2017 at 2:53 amIs there a viable (small/micro) business model for low budget (for respective market) multi-camera live streaming (YT, facebook) production service? I work as a dp and camera op (local 600) and I’ve witnessed a pretty big change in business and I’ve had a closet interest in streaming.
The first thing that came to mind was affluent international weddings. Then local sporting events. Could be schools, horses, auto events- stuff not covered by broadcast companies. But something a mom and pop size organization can start with.
As a full time freelancer I’m strictly B2B right now, with zero consumer work. The turnover of my clients (production companies) has been astounding these last 4 years, with so many simply going away, many people getting out of the industry all together.
My son started playing travel ice hockey. As a parent, and because of my occupation and the equipment I own, I started shooting the games single camera and posting on Youtube. The other parents are extremely appreciative, though i doubt parents would pay extra for something like this, but it did get the wheels turning in my head about working in completely different (and new to me) markets.
The new BM gear kicks the wheels turning a little harder/faster.
And yeah, I don’t have the extra money to just buy some gear to try it out- cause it’s never just that one or two pieces of hardware/software you need. And to setup multiplex cellular streaming- at the end of the day that looked to be a little bit of an expense all in.
Does anyone have a working biz in place?

Pretty much exactly why Apple stopped spending their money on formal trade shows a decade+ ago, I suspect.
NAB is now just a place to cement relationships and let down some of your normal social barriers.
A room full of people who share your interests and that you can interact with IRL is still valuable, because it’s the only place you can fully participate with others in the same way humans have since the dawn of time.
ALL the non-verbal cues that humankind has come to depend on are still in play. I can fudge a thousand things on a video presentation. I can make myself taller wth a judicious angle, thinner with good lighting, AND I can switch the feed off if I espouse lame arguments and get into difficult territory in the judgement of my conversation group. As we all know, with the anonymity of cyber discussions, we often go farther and are less civil than we otherwise might be.
When you’re standing in a group 3 feet from others, less of that works.
My 2 cents.
