I didn’t have luck capturing from that camera as HDV either…my tower didn’t see the camera, and my laptop SAW it, but PREVIEW DISABLED. Couldn’t figure it out. I wanted to see HDV native for testing purposes, but couldn’t. So I captured with my Kona LH as DVCPRO HD.

So, we do allot of “film-looks” and add some AE graphix files to our show. I’m thinking the new Apple Pro-res is the way to go. BUT…. I am thinking of outputing back to the Sony MU 15 and then taking that tape down to have the Beta for Broadcast made? thoughts?

Too much conversion. You’re going to take HDV, convert it to ProRes to edit, convert it back to HDV when it’s output to the Sony MU15 and then convert it again to beta.

Keep it all in HDV if you’re going back to HDV.

We convert all HDV to DVCPro HD for edit. We’re testing ProRes at the moment. Be we output either directly to Beta/DigiBeta or to DVCPro HD for mastering. We never take HDV back to HDV for mastering.

ok, bring HDV from the Canon into a ProRes timeline. Take it into the online room after changes have been made to show format. UP-res it too DVCproHD to output it to Beta? is that better?

Is that the color red you want to use?

I think there’s some misinformation in this thread.

1.Sony decks will not playback all formats of Canon’s camera… just 1080i 60 JVC’s decks will playback all flavors of HDV shot by Canon… but all those shot by Sony cameras. Yes, it stinks.

2. You can’t capture to prores unless you have an intel mac… Apple suggests a quad in fact. Power PC machines aren’t up to the task.

3. ProRes is a lot better than DVCPROHD for upconversion of HDV which I think is mandatory (at least everyone agrees on that one). it’s 10 bit for starters, and it doesn’t requre you changing file sizes.

4. If you want to export back to HDV, you’ll need to do this as a transcode in FCP before you lay it back to tape. Probably will work fine. BUT:

5. If you really want a better workflow, Buy an Io HD instead. No transcoding on CPU necessary, will work with ANY intel Mac (including a MacBook Pro), and you could output analog back to HDV without transcoding in FCP… It’s the only device on the planet that transcodes to ProRes on board. All other methods to get to ProRes during capture involve intel macs only, and again… Apple suggests a quad or you’re likely to drop frames. I can’t verify this but I can say to capture to prores thru any means requires an intel tower.

NO.

Capture HDV as ProRes…edit…color correct, OUTPUT. DO NOT go to DVCPRO HD once you capture as ProRess….again, TOO MUCH converting.

ProRes to DVCPRO HD isn’t an UPCONVERT…it would be a change of codec. Adding compression when you really don’t need to be.

Jerry, I am getting the Blackmagic hd extreme card. I can capture sdi from the canon or from the JVC deck. Which btw JVC deck do you recommend without all the bells and whistles?

Bring that captured footage into a DVCPROHD timeline or Prores timeline and then output to beta.

Damn I feel like I just started editing 17 years ago. lol. So, I need to capture to a proress timeline then lay off to beta for delievery? and prores is 1440×1080 right?

I’d capture it as ProRes, not using HDV at all. That will get your video into a 422 signal as compared to the HDV 420 signal.
