The Decklink product will probably down convert on the fly so you could do things that way.
I’d buy as much machine as you can afford. There’s not many of them anywho….
I’ve only used their top of the line machine, and it seemed OK, but I’ve never used it but one time.

Oh my… I agree. Let your capture card do the conversion for you, if needed. Then make an HDV copy ONLY as a backup, if you need.

Jerry how are the classes going up there in Denver? Don’t you teach up there? Anyway, I’m reading some RSS on the net about the JVC and some people are saying they WON’T play canon tapes. BTW, we also have a huge library shot on the XL2 that I need to be able to capture back without having to use the cameras. Which deck works?

Exactly on all points. This has been my only issue with ProRes. AJA saw this issue and solved it for us from the start. No one else has even considered to tackle ProRes. Thanks, AJA!

Will the Sony mu15 deck play canon tapes? I’ve searched all over between the JVC and the sony. I need a deck that will play the 1080i canons as well as some tapes shot on XL2.
Is that the color red you want to use?

According to Apple’s Final Cut Studio System Requirements, “Capturing HD resolution video using the ProRes 422 format requires a Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon processor or a G5 Quad computer and a qualified third-party capture card.”
The ability for the G5 Quad to capture ProRes was added in the 6.0.1 update, I believe.

Use any sony HDV deck to playback the canon HDV tapes.
It will work on everything EXCEPT 24f canon mode.The JVC WILL NOT (I own one) playback any HDV except
JVC’s HDV.And for the record my G5 Quad with a multibridge extreme will still not capture HD prores without dropping frames with the 6.01 update.
