I want to capture footage shot on a canon xl h1 @ 1080i60 w/audio. I want to capture through blackmagic hd extreme to FCP 6. then my output will be to Beta for broadcast. I have been told that the prores is the best. But I am open to the best way using these componets????

question. I am needing to purchase a deck that will handle footage shot on canon xl h1 1080i 60. I’ve heard the sony mu15 or 25 is the way to go. I wanted ask you, have youhad any issues with your sony? I am leaning towards the 15, i don’t need the display on the unit.

All you have to do is to alter your Easy Setup in the Audio/Video Settings. Change your audio to firewire and select firewire as your machine control.

I have only had the pleasure of working with HDV ONCE…and that was test footage I shot with the XL H1. I captured it thru my Kona LH as DVCPRO HD 1080i from the camera using HD SDI and the XLR outs.

I hear that they SOny HDV and Canon HDV formats are similar, so the Canon tapes play on Sony Decks, but I don’t have first hand experience with this.

Personally speaking… we use DVCProHD for broadcast airing.

While ProRes422 is absolutely awesome and stunning, but it does take twice the storage space of DVCProHD. If you have lots of graphics, ProRes is the deal!

My Sony rep told me this, too… So far, he hasn’t steered me wrong.

Let me say that from experience, HDV is great as long as you don’t work in HDV. Its too processor intensive for me, and that conforming thing on output is a waste of time.

Hey, people do things differently, and there are a LOT of workflows out there. I haven’t tried them all…so not surprising that someone knows a DIFFERENT way of doing things.

With FCP there are DOZENS of ways to accomplish tasks. That is the beauty of FCP.

ANYTHING is better than working with HDV native. And using ProRes you keep the dimensions…1440×1080. Because going DVCPRO HD brings it in as 1280×1080…losing some information there.

The issue I am having at the moment… Since our blackmagic card for this machine isn’t here. I am trying to capture footage shot 1080i on a canon xl h1. i’ve tried numerous FCP settings and it still doesn’t recognize the camera.
