i have recieved a tape that has an african american subject who was videotaped with bad lighting… the subject is sweaty, and his fill light was too harsh along the left side of his face. its not too white where it has been clipped, but it is very close… any suggestions on how i can minimize all that shine?

Use the 3 Way CC in FCP and pull down a bit on the Highlights to help bring down the shine. You could also play with some masking of just the area of the shine to bring that area down without affecting the overall brightness of the image.
