NAB is over and no FCP News? What the . . . .
Am I the only paranoid or frustrated FCP user? How is it that Apple has not made any announcements or had any leaks about updates to Final Cut Studio post NAB? They leave the show last year and now they ignore the app? Am I being paranoid here?
When are they going to do an update to Motion and give us better 3D environments? What about updates to DVD Studio Pro with Blue Ray? What about updates to Soundtrack Pro, which was left out in previous updates? Are they developing new updates and pushing the envelop or have they left the Pro Apps for consumer product/software development?
I want Final Cut Studio 3 and I want it now!
I better not hold my breathe for this to happen, hugh?

Short answer, Snow Leopard first, new Studio second.

I agree with Walter, OS first, Pro Apps next or together hopefully. I remember reading in Walter Murch’s book ‘Behind the Seen’ about some emails he had with Apple at the time regarding features that would be helpful to film editors and basically Apple’s reply was new OS first.
I talked with others at the Supermeet and FCPUG Booth and they were also disappointed about not hearing of upgrades to FCP. I did love that editing chair at the booth tho, but I didn’t win it.

Yes. You will have to connect the dots. First, take a look at the new hardware. That machine is built for Snow Leopard. Then we take a look at Snow Leopard. 64bit OS. FCP? Still 32 bit. Now, we have the hardware, and we don’t have the OS to run it to it’s full potential. Once all that’s finished, you will see a new version of FCS. How else do you think Apple is going to sell it’s top of the line $7,000 MacPro? iWork users?

something like desktops down 8% and Portables up 15%?
i think the days of the 7,000 desktop mac are numbered, albeit a high number.

Probably. I’d know I’d edit on a laptop if I could do everything I can on my desktop. The computing power and interconnectivity is just not there. For most people, a portable device is sufficient and great.
For Ultra definition video, space, medical and anything else that needs a 4-16X PCIe card (think anything that manipulates hires images in real time) then a laptop just can’t cut it. Pun intended.

I would not be surprised, especially in the consumer market. Nobody wants to sit in an office or a specific room to use their computer anymore. My wife got tired of seeing me go sit out side in the morning to read the papers online so when it came time to replace her PC desktop a few months ago, she asked for a laptop because she wants the freedom to use the computer anywhere in the house or outside. how many commercials or advertisements for PC’s or Macs have you seen with a desktop anymore? The iMac is about the only “desktop” computer I ever see featured that is not a laptop.
For consumers, there’s really no reason to get a desktop. Email, internet, word processing even graphic design and such are all great on a laptop. Only pros, business, labs need desktops and even there really only for processor intensive operations. Video Editing and Animation are two very processor intensive operations that still work best with desktops.
Sure I can edit on Final Cut Pro all day on a laptop but it will take many time over the amount of rendering time on the fastest MacBook Pro vs. a Mac Pro. Not to mention the limitation on the formats I can easily use.

FCP Suite is a powerful and mature piece of editing software. For me, the most helpful step forward in the Suite is rendering time. Simplifying work flow for using multiple computer and improved use of multiprocessing power is what we can expect next. Snow Leopard is going to open up a whole new era in rendering and could very well turn the whole business in it’s ear. Then will come the Suite. We will not be disappointed.

As I write, I’m sitting next to a fully loaded and optimized 64-bit Windows workstation with 8-cores of Nehalem procs, running apps fully optimized for that environment. It’s somewhat faster than earlier computers, but it certainly hasn’t “opened a whole new era in rendering.” Given that all workstations are essentially built around identical architecture, I think your expectations for Snow Leopard may be a bit high.

Not quite, Snow Leopard will be utilizing Open CL which will be able to use the GPU to do calculations other than for graphics. Early test done by Nvidia have shown performance increases by 4x encoding HD footage to H.264. What was suppose to have taken an hour to do was done in a fraction of the time. I wouldn’t be judging Snow Leopard to your current Windows 64bit computer.
