May 5, 2009 at 9:48 pm[Devin Crane] “Snow Leopard will be utilizing Open CL which will be able to use the GPU to do calculations other than for graphics.”
Meanwhile, companies such as Autodesk have determined that shifting the processing to the GPU does not work nearly as well as optimizing for the new hyper-threaded multi-core processors, so they have gone completely in the other direction.
[Devin Crane] “I wouldn’t be judging Snow Leopard to your current Windows 64bit computer. “
And you’re judging based upon exactly what? What exactly is your hands-on or anecdotal experience in this particular area?

May 5, 2009 at 10:36 pmIt is my understanding that CS4 is still 32bit at it’s core.

Probably because they are dependent upon other companies’ OSs and can’t get as far as if they were in control of their own. Besides Open CL is a totally new standard that not many people have been able to delve into and is much different than just running scripts off of the GPU. FCP and Motion have been doing that for years with marginal success.
I’m just looking forward to an upgrade that will start to utilize more than 2 processors, and cut my render times from 3-4 hours back down to 45minutes or less. Other than than that I’m happy.

Jeremy,
The reason I was so specific is that Photoshop CS4 (for Windows) is the one app in the Adobe suite that is (supposedly) a true 64-bit app. I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but just trying to inject a dose of reality here on a subject I’ve been researching and testing and writing articles on for several months now. And, trust me, I don’t always get things 100% right either, as ferreting out marketing hype from technological reality is intentionally very difficult these days.

Totally. The way I understand it, CS4 (save Photoshop) is optimized ot run in a 64 bit environemt, meaning that it can split off process in 32 bit land. We don’t really know what 64bit video apps in a 64bit Os really looks like yet.

Devin,
Sounds logical, but I’m not speculating — what I’m reporting here are facts, direct from developers, that I learned while researching articles for the Cow.
I’m not trying to be argumentative, nor pulling rank, just trying to get the discussion headed back toward some semblance of reality. Trust me, if rendering had become so darned fast that it was no longer a pain, I’d be the first to report it right here.
BTW, I would suggest that you take a listen to the following Cow Podcast about Autodesk Toxik: https://podcasts.creativecow.net/creative-cow-podcast/episode-066-march-10-2009. Vincent Brisbois will tell you pretty much exactly what he told me when I was over at Autodesk getting a demo of Toxik.
He discusses Autodesk’s R&D dept., whose primary job is just to create new stuff, just to see if they can make it work. They spent more than ten years developing Toxik, and they tested every conceivable hardware, software, and OS solution. Ultimately, they determined that processor speed, 64-bit processing, plus hyper and multithreading etc., has reached the point at which it no longer makes sense to shift the processing to the GPU.
So, if you want to see what the future of all this 64-bit stuff is all about, look at Toxik, it is absolutely, positively optimized for the best performance possible for realtime display and playback of 2 and 4K video, and they chose to let the procs. do the work. I can assure you, if open CL offers them the keys to the render kingdom, they’ll use it.

Ah ha, but we do… You see, I’ve been “Under the Hood and Behind the Scenes” (that’s my new Cow series BTW) at Autodesk, to see their latest version of Toxik, which is 64-bit through and through and through. At least the version in development is… I’m not sure their release version is 64-bit all the way yet, but I’ll find that out ASAP.
Take a listen to the following Cow podcast and check out Toxik, it is about as close to the future as anything out there: https://podcasts.creativecow.net/creative-cow-podcast/episode-066-march-10-2009.

If you own Toxik. For most of us peons, 64bit OS with a true 64 bit video application working environement is very very young.
