October 20, 2008 at 10:22 amAs a newbie, I would suggest learning the plugins that are already part of the package. Most new users jump quickly to 3rd party plugins and don’t take the time to learn the great plugins that already exist.
That said, I really like the Trapcode suite. I also use the BCC filters from Boris in a lot of my projects. I also have the Magic Bullet suite from Red Giant…it is great for creating film-like motion on video. I guess it depends on what you want to do….The Knoll light factory is also great for creating lens flares and will take you way beyond the lens flare filter that ships with AE.

October 20, 2008 at 4:58 pmYes, it really does depend on your needs. I might find a plug-in like RE:Map by RevisionFX really useful, but others might not.
I think Trapcode and RevisionFX produce some of the best plug-ins for AE. Also Knoll Light Factory is an awesome lens flare package (all of the usual warnings about flares apply… as in: don’t overdo it). Also Frischluft has a really good depth of field plug-in called Lenscare, but I don’t think it’s been updated in a long while so it may not be Intel Mac compatible.
