  • Multiclip – clip compatability problem Canon XL-H1 and 5D

I have footage from 2 different camera sources of a wedding ceremony.
HDV (Canon XL-H1) and MOV (Canon 5D MII)

I captured the HD footage from both devices into FCP as ProRes 422.
The frame sizes vary from 1920×1080 (5D) and 1440×1080 (XL-H1)
(look at the columns in the Browser in FCP for this information)

Note that the pixel aspect is also different between the two with the 5D footage being “square” and the HDV is shown as “HD(1440×1080)”

The audio also differs with the XL-H1 recording Stereo and the 5D 2 Mono.

Eventually after a lot of experimentation I converted the HDV footage to have the same frame size and pixel aspect as the 5D footage. (I did not change the audio)

This enabled me to create the multiclip in FCP. So I have 2 angles in the multiclip and it plays fine in the Browser.

However when I take the multiclip into the timeline Sequence the whole clip shows that it needs rendering which indicates to me that there is some mismatch between the clips.

When I try to edit by playing the canvas only one angle plays back in the browser (set to OPEN in the playhead sync menu). I can “blindly” edit the clip using the button bar however I have no idea what I am cutting to as I can only see the one angle.

I have looked through all the audio video settings and the only thing that I can find different is the audio settings.
The sequence setting Aud format is 32-bit floating point whilst the clips are 16 bit integer (whatever that means)

I can bring the separate clips into the same Sequence on 2 separate tracks and they don’t need rendering and this is in fact how I have had to edit the 2. real pain.

Has anyone any idea as to what the problem could be.

    Cheers

    PS I am using Compressor 3.0.5 & FCP 6.0.6

    Cheers

The mismatch is likely that the HDV-ProRes footage from the Canon is interlaced upper and the 5D will be none. The audio should not make any difference. Actual audio from both cameras is 16 bit 48khz (providing the 5D has later firmware where frame rates and audio sample rate was fixed.) There is no real difference between stereo and dual mono except FCP default pans stereo to hard left/right.

FCP says the sequence is 32 bit floating point which is what the sequence uses to calculate EQ, dynamics and mix parameters which need the high bit rate for internal processing. FCPs actual output is 24 bit or 16 bit depending on your sequence preferences.

Check the clip information from each camera and see if you can see anything like field dominance, audio sample rate or any other differences that might need rendering.

Thanks Michael, I will check through the info, cannot see anyhting on the surface though.
