    Hey,
I am trying to finish a video in vegas pro but some of the files i am using Vegas will not open.

I filmed all the shots exactly the same and at the same time but vegas won’t open the last few of them. They are all the same file type, mp4, and all roughly the same size. Vegas had no probelms with the other files during importing or editting. The error message simply reads ‘error’ and asks to make sure the file is there and not missing. The file is definitely there as it plays in VLC but vegas just won’t allow me to open it to edit it in any way.

I would really like to know if there is a way around this or whether I’m doing something wrong as Vegas is still fairly new to me but I can’t figure out how to fix the problem myself.

Thank you for your help, this work is needed for a college project which is causing lots of stress as it wont work.

    Hi there!
I think you’re missing the codecs.
I made a google search and came up to a site that said:

“If Sony Vegas does not accept your MP4 files, you will need the K-Light Codec pack. When installing, use the standard install.”
    And here’s ‘K-Light Codec Pack’
    https://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

    Hope it works for you.

“If Sony Vegas does not accept your MP4 files, you will need the K-Light Codec pack. When installing, use the standard install.”

Never, ever, NEVER install a “codec pak” unless you don’t care about Vegas working properly. If you need a codec, find the codec you need and just install that codec. Codec paks have been know to cause all sorts of problems for video editors in general and Vegas Pro in particular and they don’t uninstall properly. So once you mess things up, you’d better have a backup of your system or be prepared for format your C: drive and install your OS fresh.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Installing a codec pak to fix a video problem is like taking every pill in your medicine cabinet in hopes one will cure you. Unfortunately, most will kill you first. Codec paks will overlay high quality codecs from Vegas that you paid good money for with low quality free alternatives. This i not something you want to do!

In this particular case, if all of the MP4 files came from the same camera and some of them work, you do not need a codec. I don’t know why Vegas is having trouble with these MP4 files but I do know that MP4 is a terrible format to be editing. Unless you are using an industry standard format like DV or HDV or AVCHD, I would transcode your footage into a standard format before editing. Just because your camera shoots a particular format doesn’t mean it’s a good format to be editing with. Unfortunately, this is the “dirty little secret” that the makers of these MP4 camera don’t tell you.

You can try using AviDemux 2.5 to convert the MP4 files that don’t work into MJPEG video with PCM audio and see if that helps.
