I’ve got a bunch of clips (HDV, MiniDV ) that I’m trying to convert to a standard that will work on the same timeline…

I’d like to convert the files to fit onto a DVCPro HD 720p60 timeline with a timebase of 23.98fps. So, in an effort to do so, I selected an export option of “Movie to Quicktime Movie File”, I select DVCPro HD 720p60, and then selected the frame rate as custom set to 23.98.

When I import the converted clip into FCP, it doesn’t display the full frame, unless I set the clip’s composite mode to anything besides “Normal”. That stinks, because it then needs to render.

Also, I must be missing something, because it insists on greying out the quality option, so it’s automatically set to “medium”.

Is it just my settings thus far, or do all conversions come out with jerkiness in the end? Does conversion on a capture card give a smoother product?

    Thanks!

I would use a Kona 2 or Kona 3 for this and capture everything directly to the DVCPro HD codec. The Kona 2 runs on older model PCI-X machines while the K3 runs on the newer PCIe machines.

The K2 and K3 will do the Up-convert of the MiniDV on the fly during capture.

    Thank you…

Although we’re getting a Kona card in-house, I think that’ll be the last option, as they had already imported all the footage for this project in their native formats. It’d be a tough sell to convince the powers that be to spend the extra time re-importing things on the machine that’s got the Kona, since that is their most important machine.

Is there any way to get the QT Pro conversion to work? Is a Kona conversion less jerky?
