Mixing Canon 5D footage & Panasonic HDX900 Issues
I want to make life as easy as possible for the FCP editor when I bring him footage. Primary footage will be shot on a Panasonic HDX900, and some b-roll will come from a Canon 5D. Nobody cares whether the spot is cut in 720 or 1080. My questions are these concerning the best format settings for both camera and FCP timeline:
1. 1080i or 720p?(24 or 30)? for Panasonic 900?
2. 1080p 24 or 30 for Canon 5D?
3. FCP timeline.Pro bono job so no other camera choices. Worthy cause though.

Choice about frame rates and frame size are usually informed by how the final product will be distributed and displayed.
Is it for broadcast, web, DVD etc?

Yes, will be for broadcast.

29.97 1080i is most common for broadcast.

Well…. lately I have been editing a LOT of footage at 23.98…and we deliver 23.98 masters, that can easily be converted to 29.97 for air. It all depends on if they want it to look like video, or look like film. Cadence wise.
DO NOT FORGET TO CONVERT the Canon 5D footage to ProRes. Just making sure…too many people don’t and think FCP works with H.264 files the camera shoots…it doesn’t.

Thanks, I did know about converting the Canon 5D to ProRes. I’m sure “film look” would excite them.
What’s more important, having both cameras shooting in progressive (meaning Panasonic HDX900 is at 720p 24 and the Canon 5D at 1080p 24)? Or, keeping both at 1080 with the HDX900 at 30i and the Canon at 24p or 30p)?

DO NOT MIX FRAME RATES! That’d be bad bad bad. Shot 720p with the HDX900. Even at 720p, the imagery is great.

OR…shoot 1080i30 on the panasonic (well, 1080i60, but it is 30fps), and 1080p30 with the Canon DSLRs. Depends on the look you want.

If I’m not wrong the 5D shoots real 1080p30.
Once converted to Prores needs to be conformed to p29,98.
