Media Encoder changing 16:9 Aspect Ratio to 4:3 (mac)
Hi,
My problem is attempting to export a number of projects from Premiere Pro (CS4 – 4.0.1) through Media Encoder in the 16:9 aspect ratio. I get this problem across basically every codec i try.
When viewing the “output” view in Media Encoder – the aspect ratio is right. It’s also correct in the preview window as the render is in progress. When I use the info screen on the output file to gather info on the pixel aspect ratio – this is also correct. Yet when i play the file in QT – the video is squashed into 4:3.
I’m able to play other 16:9 video’s in QT – it’s only when it is exported from Premiere Pro. If I reimport it into Premiere Pro or burn it to DVD – the 16:9 ratio fixes itself…
I’ve recently upgraded computers (macs) and this problem occurs on both of them.

I seem to recall (but don’t know authoratively) that QT player does not handle non-square pixels. If you want 16:9 you need to use square pixels and an appropriate pixel resolution.

Just to confirm – HDV camera’s produce a 1440 x 1080 image in 1.333 pixel ratio? I think this was part of my confusion around it all…

I believe so (I don’t use HDV), so you need to export to a 1920×1080 frame size with a 1.0 pixel aspect ratio for QT playback.
