    hey SAN Networks

i thought i would post this question here instead of in the CatDV and FCSvr forums, so i can avoid the kneejerk “CatDV is the best”-type answers. even though i’m already a huge fan of CatDV.

so i’m looking for project management (both physical files related to projects, and interactions and communications between editors), scheduling, and asset management. i’ve been trying to use Basecamp for our project management and scheduling. it kinda works, but it’s definitely not made for production or post. my biggest problem with it is i can only create “milestones” or due dates, but i can’t say that Steve will take 4 days for DVD authoring in Edit 2, while Ted is working for 3 days on sound design in the ProTools suite.

i’ve looked at (and tested) CatDV for asset management and really like what i see. the 2 biggest things i need are the ability to import logs from FCP (which it can do), and search with web-quality previews (which it can do), since it’s not an option to get a 150TB SAN to keep everything online. but my bosses have balked at the price for CatDV server. even after i explain how much we need it for our massive TV and feature projects because FCP just can’t open projects large enough to contain all of that media for searching.

we’ve hired a new editor and he suggested a new web-based app called Shotgun. has anyone here heard of it or tried it? it works in a similar way to Basecamp, but is much more customizable and more geared toward production and post. with a plug-in called RV, it looks like it may work like CatDV with video files, but i can’t tell. it looks like it could be a Basecamp replacement, but my biggest question is can it work like CatDV in the ways we need (as i outlined above)?

    thanks for any insight.

Eric – you know that I like you, and you know that this is not directed at you personally, so here it goes.
I am SICK AND TIRED of these f@#$ing morons that think that they can do advanced asset management for $1000 for unlimited clients, and web proxies, with no training, and no assistance. You do not buy a copy of FCSvr and a week later, you are an expert in setting up all the features of this program, creating proxies instantly, having watch folders grabbing your media, and having web access to all of your files. It doesn’t work this way with FCSvr, and it doesn’t work this way with even CatDV Server. IT COSTS MONEY TO DO THIS, and if you don’t like that fact – well, guess what – you don’t get professional asset management.
Just like the morons that want to do shared storage for $500 bucks – YOU LOSE, you don’t get to do it.

You want the pro stuff – you pay for it – even with FCSvr. And if you are the monkey that is hired to setup FCSvr, this full feature set is complicated, and you will NOT figure it all out by yourself in a week.

Bob, you and i are very much on the same page. it’s really frustrating trying to manage assets with no asset management software, no matter the price. the times have changed. a few 400ft mags of film have been replaced with enough P2 and CF cards to leave the cameras on all day. there’s 10-100 times more footage now to keep track of. the old methods don’t work anymore.

taking asset management out of the question though, has anyone any experience with Shotgun? it looks like it would be a great scheduling and production management app. kinda like the EP apps, but web-based. i’m gonna ask over in the CatDV and FCSvr forums.

    thanks

Does the project management need to be a shared app? If not you can get the Gantt goodness you are after in OmniPlan on your desktop.

Shotgun looks really nice. Paying per user will add up for a big team though.

    Best,
    Andy
