Wow. i don’t even know where to begin. I upgraded to vegas 12 about 6 months ago and it’s been the biggest regret of my life. however Vegas 12 was still workable until about 10 hours ago.
The first thing to keep in mind is that i HAVE NOT installed or changed anything on my system just before Vegas decided to quit on me.
Vegas 12 Pro has always been buggy for me, and crashes often. But never like this. The biggest problem i face now is that i can’t drop files onto the timeline without Vegas crashing. Something as simple as a .PNG file will crash vegas now. Even if i double click the file I’ll still get problems. I’ve tried to start a new project and get the same issues. I’ve also uninstalled/re installed AND system restored and Vegas is basically at a point where it wont work on my system anymore.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit with an intel core 7 3.20 GHz with 16GB of ram. My system is more than up to the challenge of vegas.

Anybody know why something like this would happen so suddenly and why re-installing the software doesn’t correct this problem?

    Thanks
    Jack

I had the same problem with build 486 after a while. I tracked the crashing down to Vegas trying to create thumbnails for ANY media imported. This sounds like the problem you are having. I also have no idea why the crashing suddenly started. I reverted back to build 367 and it solved my problem.

I’m ready to try anything! Can you walk me through how i revert back to a previous version? Should I just install the digital copy i purchased online? I don’t think that is the latest version.

it’s strange. It doesn’t crash until I try to drag something into the timeline. well… ‘doesnt crash’ is strong words. Vegas 12 hasn’t exactly been Mr. Stable. But at least I could work for 20-30 minuets before a crash would occur. now it’s pretty much broken.

Apparently a few other people have had this problem about a month ago. It looks like a corrupted thumbnail file is to blame. Read this thread.

Thanks for the thread. I’ll try tomorrow, but with little hope in this.
I just started a clean new project a little while ago to test the problem, and as soon as i tried to pull a file down into the time line it crashed immediately. So strange that this would happen after nothing was changed or installed into my computer. And even stranger when i read forum messages about how stable vegas 12 is for them. Wish i could get that going for me. i love vegas, but 12 has been a disaster from day one.

A] Any Windows Updates? I’ve read about this being responsible too.

B] We are all aware that Build releases, within a Version of VP, maybe responsible. And again, frustratingly, this may only be the case for some of us.

C] OK, try this experiment, it’s easy:

STEP 1: Temporarily turn OFF Thumbnails by using LIST or DETAIL View within Project Media Pane. Do you get any improvement?

STEP 2: Close Vegas and Navigate to using your OWN [user name] with this PATH
    C:Users[user name]AppDataLocalSonyVegas Pro

You will see the 12.0 folder. Now, I have COPIED this folder just to retain its integrity, but then DELETE the original, you could always re-invoke it by using the copy!

STEP3: Reboot PC and open Vegas. Any improvement? I found this worked for me.

The bottom line on this one is that it known to SONY and they are working on it.

    Cheers

Well BOTH of you guys had the same basic idea about the corrupt thumbs, I followed your list and sure enough… i’m editing right this second!
Have a lot of time to make up, but happy this is finally working.
    whew!

thanks guys, always amazes me the kindness of strangers that take time out to help.

For the record, Sony support hasn’t gotten back to me, and those guys get paid. lol

Well, I ask ‘cos I don;t think it is corrupt thumbs, you weren’t getting this in a previous Build. My thoughts are that the install of the build or version requires a deletion of that Folder.

Real glad it’s working for you now.
