  • Masking/Frame Rate Problem In Sony Vegas 8.0

Posted by Courtney Smith on July 21, 2009 at 3:45 am

I like to make videos of anime characters. This means that the episodes I get use the frame rate from Japan (23.976). I used to use the frame rate of 29.970, but I had a friend tell me to change it.
Now, I’ve taken a very long amount of time to make sure that every single second of movement is masked on the video clip that I’m using. And, when I look at the masking window, everything looks fine. However, when I look at the displayed window, the masking is always a little bit behind or ahead of the video. Even when I render it, the masking is STILL off. It’s very choppy and it’s really frustrating me!! PLEASE HELP!!
Before you make any suggestions, please note:
    1. I have already checked to make sure that the frame rate is 23.976 on the video properties, the project properties, AND the rendering properties.
    2. I HAVE masked this video VERY precisely. There shouldn’t be any glitches.

Now, PLEASE, share your knowledge with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you check the framerate of your Japanes file with GSpot? Because Japan is using NTSC-J with a framerate of 29.97f/s

And if the framerate is 23.976, did you set the fieldorder to progressive?

GSpot says that the frame rate is 23.976. That is, if the frame rate is the number to the right of “Frames/s”.

The Field order is set to “None (progressive scan)”. So, that would be a yes, right?

So that looks OK. What kind of files is your footage (DV-avi, MPEG4 etc?) Did you only do masking? Or also other types of effects? Did you do the masking with the event pan/crop tool? Or did you make your masks on another way?

It’s an .avi file as far as I know.
I’ve selected “Use timecode in file”. The timecode in file is: SMPTE Film Sync IVTC (23.976 fps, Video)

    Format: Xvid MPEG-4 Codec
    Attributes: 704x396x24, 00:00:01.293
    Frame rate: 23.976 (IVTC Film)
    Field order: None (progressive scan)
    Pixel aspect ratio: 1.00000 (Square)
    Alpha channel: None

I have also used “Gradent Map” on the file, but I tried masking on another file a while back with no effects on it and it acted up the same way.
Yes, I used to event pan/crop tool to mask.

I think it’s time for other peaple to speak also, but I absolutely wouldn’t be surprised if your problem is caused by the fact that you are editing an MPEG4 file. This usually doesn’t work well.
Ofcourse you can try to convert it to a format that likes to be edited, but this will do no good to the quality of the output.

Theo is right. This will never work with an MPEG4 file. This is because MPEG uses interframe compression. This means that some frames rely on other frames for their data because they are only delta frames. You cannot perform accurate masking on files with interframe compression because most of the frames are not “real”. They are assembled from the previous frames and depending on whether you play forward or backward you may get different data in the frame.

You need to convert the files to a codec that uses intraframe compression. Intraframe uses only the current frames data to compress. Try HuffYUV, Lagarith, M-JPEG, DV, CineForm, etc. Any of these codecs will give you accurate frames for masking/editing.
