  • Major flaws with “titling” in svp11 – almost useless

    Well,
I’m not impressed at all with titling in Vegas. Here’s what I’m finding.

If I wish to create “fancy” titles I have 2 tools:

    1. NewBlueFx titler – crashes ALL THE TIME! unusable.
    2. Sony Pro titler – when I use this with other tracks, previewing is unusable… jumpy can’t see what the video looks like as it would be viewed by the user.

So… I’m only left with the basic Sony Titles and Text.

This annoys me, tools that I pay for, that appear great… but can’t be used.

Is it just me or are others experiencing this?

Yes, Giles, I have the same issues with NewBlueFx titler. If I use it, I must render it (m2ts) and bring it back as a rendered file.

Not you alone Gilles , As i mentioned in a previous post,
i simply do my titling using the basic titles and After Effects.
Too many options out there to be bogged down with one limitation.

Well… the NewBlue Titler is not from Sony so you can get help from NewBlue FX if it’s not working for you.

The ProType Titler was a good idea executed poorly. We all got excited when we saw it but as you have experienced, it is not well integrated with the timeline as the other Sony tools and so it’s usefulness is diminished greatly by this.

Having said that, I believe the new Titles & Text plug-in in Sony Vegas Pro 11.0 is awesome. It it way easier to use than the ProType Titler, it has a lot more animation presets built in than the ProType Titler, and you can directly manipulate the text on the Vegas preview window to place it exactly where you want it.

So when you say that you are “only left with the basic Sony Titles and Text” I don’t agree because Sony Titles and Text in Vegas Pro 11.0 is a great title tool.

[Sony Titles and Text in Vegas Pro 11.0 is a great title tool.]
Still needs to be a whole lot better !

    Thanks for your response everyone,
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one with these issues.

As I have to use AE more frequently to add a pro quality to my titles/graphics I will look into switching to Adobe Premier. AE and Premier work very seamlessly together from my speaking with users. It wouldn’t hurt to try it out. Seems to have a strong following too.

It’s not the software that makes a great video. The software is a tool, but… the tool must be stable. If it integrates well with other tools, all the better.
    Food for thought.

You might want to check out Boris Graffiti or Boris RED or even Boris Continuum Complete for titles. They all integrate seamlessly into Vegas Pro just like AE and Premiere. No need to switch.

It depends on what types of titles you are looking for. I usually keep titles either very simple in which Sony Titles and text is perfect, or I’m trying to make an impact in which case I use Boris RED/Graffiti or Boris Continuum Complete 3D Titles with text shatter and particle effects etc. But for “every day” titles, Sony Titles and Text is my “go to” titler.

Gilles, No need to switch to Premiere Pro, i can tell you,
with Vegas and After Effects, you are in a perfect land, weather
seamless integration or not, After Effects can render to almost
any format already, that drops easily into Vegas. You can easily
do a complete edit from start to final output in After Effects.

    Thanks Steve,

My concern is in the workflow of the two together. I’ve used them together before but it was a real challenge when the client wanted to make a slight change in timing or in the actual effect/text generated in AE. Every time, I had to make the change an AE, render that (remembering the render settings previously used) and then re-render the vegas project.

So say I have a project and want to simply make a cut/segment shorter, and that segment has a layer of an AE generated text above which also needs to be re-synced, this becomes a very labourious/time-consuming process.

Perhaps I’m not using them together using the best method.

Another example: say you want to make an animated intro in AE which will be layered on top of your vegas project at the beginning. and say you vegas project start is looking great with cuts synced to the music, etc. How do you work in an AE overlay which will match the music? I can think of a few ways but none seem efficient, especially if the client may request a few seconds to be cut for instance. then all needs to be resynced, recreated.

    What’s the correct workflow?

    Hi John,
Thought I’d give Sony titles and text another go. I tried the “coming at you” preset, as is, out of the box. Performance is pathetic. it jumps/stutters like mad and I can’t really see the true result. This is at Preview-half resolution and with the track solo-ed.

Unless I’m doing something wrong…it’s not really unusable.
