  • Magnetic timeline too Magnetic – Can’t turn off?

So sometimes I like to throw a clip at the end of a sequence or move clips later in a timeline and have a gap. In FCPX, do I have to add a gap to make that work? Can I just turn off the magnetic timeline and slide stuff around so that I have gaps or do I always need to insert a gap to make it do what I want?

I read somewhere here that if you use the POSITION control it temporarily turns off the magnets.

    it’s called f’n BS… you can’t turn it off.

Apparently in all the user requests to Apple on FCP, messing with something that wasn’t broken was at the top.

Flip from ‘Select’ mode to ‘Position’ mode, and clips will go exactly where you drag them, overwriting other clips or leaving gaps as necessary. To delete a clip and leave a gap, use ‘Replace With Gap’ instead of just deleting normally. (‘Replace With Gap’ is assigned to the forward delete key.)

A couple of more useful semi-related features: if you drop a clip on another clip in the timeline, a contextual menu will give you replacement options. Also, you can now insert specific (named) placeholder clips (with Edit -> Insert Placeholder), so things you intend to fill in later don’t just have to be gaps named with markers anymore.

Thanks Chris. You’ve been working hard today getting the right information to the people who are interested in resolving issues and learning more about how FCP X actually works.

    Right on.

I think I’d like to be able to switch between Select and Position mode while I’m dragging a clip, just like how you can turn snapping off and on while dragging a clip.

    Thanks,

Oh my god. I had been figuring out a LOT of stuff on my own, and getting to the point where I am definitely cutting faster than I was before, but between this and the other things I learned today, I can take over the world.

Folks, you need to stop complaining and look at what can be done. So far, I have found either a minor workaround to almost every problem I’m finding, or just a flat out better/faster way to get things done.

    Thanks so much, Chris.

    Hey Nate,

What’s your simple work around for printing to tape? Or getting an EDL to the colorist? Or multicam editing? Or getting client monitoring working?

    Looking forward to those tips.

[Chris Conlee] “Looking forward to those tips.”

    I said almost every issue.

    Love your snark.

Well at least it’s only a few small details missing.
