What you are forgetting is a) no spinning drive and b) even just a single FirePro GPU is well more expensive than the 5770. If there’s ONLY dual FirePros as an option, you are well over $4000 then.

I think the economies of scale, Apple being a large purchaser, will keep prices lower than what you might see for individual component purchases. When the MacBook Air moved to new SSD PCIe drives the price didn’t change.

Used Mac Pros seem like a bargain. My 3.1 is still running fine three years on. I have a USB 3.0 card along with nvidea and lots of RAM.For faster rendering I use the mb Pro I7. I likely will upgrade to a later M Pro before the new one. I plan to wait on the next gen before considering buying.

Which USB 3 card are you using and have you run into any compatibilities issues with it?

Scale only drops the price by so much. And there might only be an option for *dual* GPUs.

Let’s not forget PCIe based storage, of which I would be surprised if the *minimum* is under 512GB.

The WWDC introduction and the teaser page on Apple’s site are explicit that the MacPro comes standard with dual GPUs.
