  • Mac Pro CPU Temperatures?

Posted by Chris Wiggles on March 19, 2011 at 7:53 pm

I did some googling, couldn’t really find good answers.

    I have an 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro (2 x 2.26ghz).

Been running compressor all night, 8 more hours to go. How hot is too hot for these CPUs?

    Temperature monitor reports:
    CPU A: 80C
    CPU B: 61C

And the hottest cores range around 87-89 degrees C.

istat pro says my boost A&B fans are running around 3200rpm.

    I’m in a 68degree F room.

Is this all normal or should I be concerned? Just curious what your experiences are when processing.

    Regards,
    Chris

There’s a heat sensor on the main-board that will do the monitoring for you automatically. When your Mac suddenly shuts down and smells like burned toast you need to start worrying, but until then just keep being creative.

I ran a temp widget on my machine for a while just for grins, and your readings seem typical.
    I wouldn’t worry.

I have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.
    You should be suitably impressed…

The temp sensors should turn the computer off before it gets to hot.

I used to place a domestic fan in front of my G5 and go to sleep.
As soon as I put it, at the lower speed, the G5 fans slowed down.

Keep in mind that Rafael lives in the tropical environment of Laos. So, his computer is hot before he even turns it on.

Great, thanks for the help guys!

Good to know these are normal readings when going at full tilt.
