To be fair here, there is nothing wrong with running little snitch
    at all really.

The first I’d heard of it was as a shield for malware that would get on your
mac then try and turn your machine into a zombie for a D.O.S. attack.

Little Snitch is essentially a free mac version of Zone Alarm.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

BUT…. I guess what Jeremy clearly does not understand is that
having a single final cut pro license running on more than one system
    IS ILLEGAL PERIOD.

[Jeremy Bird] “With all due respect I thought this was a technical forum. And if you read my previous post I state clearly that I am NOT the boss, meaning I am not the person making the purchases here. Just looking for some technical advice. That’s all. “

You’ve received all the answers you need. What your company is doing is illegal, that’s been covered enough.

Remember the part where I said that nobody needs to add anything? 🙂

Seriously, lots of folks out there waiting for your help. Mooooove along please.

I thought a thread was either removed, or posting within guidelines was allowed. Now there’s a third option of scolding down a thread?

[Steven Gonzales] “I thought a thread was either removed, or posting within guidelines was allowed. Now there’s a third option of scolding down a thread?”

Scolding, moderating. Potato, tomahto. The point is that it’s time to moooove along since all the points have been made and are just being repeated.

Except for any points regarding my big giant forehead. But those belong on their own thread.

Otherwise, pretty please, moooooove along, to spread signal and joy throughout the noisy land.

[Jeremy Bird] “like I said, I just work here. I’m trying to deal with the limitations”

I think the best way to deal with the situation at your work would be to go in to the boss and explain the problems it is creating at work, explain that you are not in a position to fix the problem because you do not have purchasing power nor are you willing to break the law. Ask him to please remedy the situation as it is making you less productive.

Let him take the burden of the choice to be illegal if he chooses, but this way you are not the one that did the dead. That way if the scary men in the dark suits come knocking at the door, the boss is the one that they are looking for and he cannot say that he had no idea that one of his employees had done that.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

maybe ask the boss to get final cut express as the licences are a lot cheaper, then when he has the cash get a proper copy of final cut pro for every machine

this really was a silly post, asking people that have paid for their licences to tell you how to pirate aint the best idea

Yeah, it was a stupid thing to ask on this board and what he’s doing is totally against the law. But you guys are freaking out and treating him like he’s burning copies and selling them on Canal St. Yes it’s illegal, but I don’t consider what he’s doing to be particularly immoral so long as he’s the only user and he’s only using one copy at a time. I’m not excusing it, but sometimes there is such thing as nuance when it comes to moral issues of right and wrong. I’m simply saying that while it may still be wrong, it’s not worthy of the brutal outrage you guys are giving him.

One thing I want to add. I don’t like this “violating the license agreement” outrage. You should be mad because it’s illegal, not because it violates an agreement. Here in California, Sacramento decides what is legal, not Cupertino. Forgive my paranoia, but I don’t like to see our culture susceptible to becoming a fascist corporatocracy.

I’m going to be very unpopular for going against the grain of all these “shame on you” messages but then again that has never been my style. I will answer your question.

I’ve used Little Snitch and it works great. I like to know when my computer is calling out over the Internet at anytime – it’s helpful to see when apps you never knew were active and contacting servers in far off places for who knows what reasons. It’s a tool – and I know software pirates use it but it has a lot of helpful non piracy uses.

That being said – I think the Final Cut check that you speak of never contacts the Internet – it simply looks at your network (maybe via Bonjour) to see if there is another copy of Final Cut running. If that happens, the second Final Cut will not start. Unless you can modify Little Snitch to alert you of all inside network traffic (something that would be a pain to see) – then it’s not really going to help you.

Totally agree with you Sean. As a registered user of my software and someone who doesn’t pirate – I really cannot understand the ferocity and fervor of all this holier than thou finger wagging. As someone who bought the software what do you care if Jonny-down-the-street downloaded his software illegally? How does that seriously effect you? It doesn’t. Sure the act of pirates might be built into your cost – but I’d say that is minimal at best.

I know personally that a lot of my friends and people I associate with on a PROFESSIONAL level are software pirates in some form or another – and do I care? Heck no I don’t care. It’s about as low level of a legal infraction that there is in my opinion – on par with a parking ticket or J-walking in my opinion. A lot of these posts are so vitriolic and have the overtones of an RIAA or MPAA lawyer. I’ve never known common folk to want to align themselves in that way.

And Sean your point about the licensing agreement is well received – I would prefer an uproar over the restrictive wording of the licensing agreement over the blind drinking of the Apple kool-aid and assenting to all their legal positions. But that’s just me.

Oh and sorry Tim if me continuing this thread personally upsets you – I’ve been contributing here for years and years and I never knew that I could offend admins when there was still clearly still fresh dissenting opinions on the matter. I think you have the power to lock or delete this post so if you feel it necessary – feel free to exercise that power.

    -Paul
