“We are using our paid-for, registered copy of FCP on a few machines.”

The FCP end user agreement only allows the simultaneous installation of the software on two computers, one desktop and one laptop, both owned by you. It never allows for the installation of the software on multiple machines. To do so is wholly illegal and subject to prosecution.

    All the best,

    Tom

Sorry Mr. Bird but this is one argument that you are not going to win, no matter how you try to justify it.

Jeremy you must own a copy of fcp for each computer/laptop you have.

apple is generous to allow the laptop as an additional license.

    Thats the bottom line.

What your asking for is wrong no matter how you view it.

You won’t get any encouragement or help here for it I guarantee.

[Jeremy Bird] “I’m just trying to smooth the workflow at the office”

    Jeremy,

In case you don’t realize it, your post above is chocked full of rationalizations, but “just trying to smooth the workflow” is the best of all, because it sounds so very positive, so constructive, and so very much like what we, as professionals, are supposed to be about.

Of course, that’s the very nature of rationalization, which is defined as, “a defense mechanism in which unacceptable behaviors or feelings are explained in a rational or logical manner, avoiding the true explanation of the behavior or feeling in question.”

So, for the record, it makes little difference how you attempt to justify it, or whether you or your boss will ever get caught, you are in fact breaking the license agreement, period, end of story…

You are barking up the wrong tree here. No matter is you agree with it you are violating Apple’s copyright agreement. Only one machine can run (or have open) any of the FCS applications. If you don’t want to buy seats for each system, then live with yelling “hey I need to use FCP whoever has it open please quit it.”

    You Said:

another massive payment to Apple for another FCP disc

its like a thousand bucks per copy. If thats seems really massive to you, you need to look at your business model.

maybe 5 or 6 machines in the office dont use it, maybe you only get 2 more copies and set em up on dedicated machines that people can jump onto when they need em, and jump off when they are done.

and for every copy apple will allow you to install it on a macbook pro, so you can have a portable machine for When You Are Not Using Your Mac Pro.

Maybe you get FC Express for the people that do not need heavy editing

there are many ways to skin the cat without resorting to a crack

crackers are a great bunch of guys. they tell you that their hacks and cracks are clean, and yey they compete to come up with the best virus.
just the kinda software I want on my machine :()

anyway, try some of the alternatives I have suggested. Sometimes everyone gets spoiled having their own macs and such. just good scheduling can keep the number of copies you need to a minimum

    hope this helps…..really 🙂

    Sheeeesh you guys.

Thanks for all of your opinions on using pirated software. That’s not what we’re doing here. I merely asked if anyone had experience using that program, not textbook definitions or morality lessons. I’d think there’d be a more appropriate forum for that…

And like I said, I just work here. I’m trying to deal with the limitations, something we regularly have to do as editors. Right? Wait – Don’t answer that.
