Jamming timecode to Beta SP
I use the Aja Kona LHe 3.3 with Final Cut Pro 5.1.2
I am trying to output a SD 720×486 29.97 Drop Frame timeline to Beta SP while synchronized timecode.
My sequence begins at 00:58:30;00 and the program on the Beta tape must begin at 01:00:00;00
I tried matching the timecode offset in the AJA Control Panel timecode window as mentioned in the manual but not luck.
AJA KONA MANUAL:
Output Timecode Offset (entry field and FPS pull-down)—this text entry field
allows you to specify a timecode offset for use with Final Cut Pro (or any other
application that has timecode offsets that are user-controlled). In FCP, go to
“Timeline Options” and locate the “Starting Timecode” value. Use that same
value here as the “Output Timecode Offset” to ensure the timecode is
synchronized.Component I/O from Beta is Good
Deck control during capture is fine
Hopefully don’t have to use print to video because in the past this has hosed projects.
Testing some things…
I can use edit to tape just fine but now I have to record 5 seconds of black at the head of each blank tape
in order to do the assemble edit or is there a faster way to crash record with the timecode from my sequence?BTW we’re using a PVW-2800 with RS-422 controller
What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

in order to do the assemble edit”That’s the way it’s done. Assemble edit your timeline to a tape with the proper time code. You can use the black and code function that will actually set the proper tc on the deck (at least it does on a UVW1800). I set the black and code to 58:20:00 and then record to past 58:30:00:00. I then pack the tape, then do an assemble edit starting at 58:30.

Saves some dropout mess. After I black and code, I fast forward all the way and then rewind all the way (pack the tape) then do an assemble edit. Old school analog stuff, but it works.

I haven’t packed a tape like that since… well about 8 or 9 formats ago, maybe 3/4SP was the last.
Been working with Nick on this one and I have to say, it’s a pain. We only have 10 dubs this time from separate sequences, but it may be 50 next time. Shame you can’t just crash record on the deck and when then sequence starts playback it just jams the TC correctly. Or even start the sequence and then record. What a time waster.

You can send LTC from an ioHD or get yourself a tc generator and go LTC in to the deck.
You can also prestripe the tapes. Perfect intern work if you have one.

We have a horita box that “steals” the timecode from the RS422 connector and turns it into an LTC output that we send to the deck. We loop the RS422 from the Kona breakout box to the Horita then on to the deck.
Load a tape, crash record with external timecode set, hit play on the sequence and BAM everything goes down in sync. No pre-striping necessary.
