Hi guys, is Premiere CS4 buggy as hell or is it my system that just can’t keep up. I’ve had it crash on me today numerous times and I’ve restarted it myself numerous times because it slows to a stop. I’m trying to edit a 10 minute sequence and it’s taking me all day because PPro is moving at a snails pace. Here’s my computer specs – can you guys take a look and tell me if I need a beefier computer to run PPro CS4?

    Thanks very much!!!

You should definitely upgrade to Service Pack 3.

Also – what kind of video are you working with? If it’s any of the mpeg based formats you should delete all the index files (delete everything in the media Cache folder) and let the program re-index.

I wasn’t aware that there was a service pack 3 for Vista – I’ll get right on that.

Also, I’m working with M2T files from my Sony Z7U.

    Thanks David!!!

David – I don’t believe that Vista has a service pack 3….am I wrong about that? Would it help if I upgraded to Vista Ultimate?

Also, if I delete everything in my media cache folder, will that mess up projects that I’m in the process of working on now?

At this point there is only one service pack for Vista.

    See these troubleshooting tips.

Service pack 3 is the requirement for XP actually, you have Vista which has only Service Pack 1.

I see your system seems OK…it depends a bit on what you’re editing of course. Processor I/O is as important as how many cores you have, and I’m not as up on what all the configurations of intel systems are these days. Basically a dual processor, dual core SHOULD be a bit faster with large video files than a single processor quad core as you have more “pipe” moving the math on and off the procs…however, I doubt that we’re talking about go/no go kinds of thresholds…more a bit of a responsiveness advantage seen when the systems are compared side-by-side.

    I don’t see a harddrive specification here…what’s that like?

Also…I have had numerous issues over the last couple years with junk running on my system doing “helpful” things like constantly checking for Java updates, or Apple’s QT updater sucking up 60% of the processor cycles to check if there’s a new point update of that…and once it starts, it just keeps running for some reason. On my dell M90 one day I just watched the task manager in amazement as the computer just spontaneously went to full-on drive access and 60-70% processor usage with no apps launched and me not even moving the mouse…

    So check that…

    Dear Dean,

I am having nightmares with Production premium cs3 as well with crashes. Such as “Premeire pro has encounted a serious error and has to close” when I am for example razor a clip and going to move aclip, sometimes browsing my media int he project browser to choose a take to preview in the source window. Amoung numerous other instability problems with After Effects, Premiere, Encore.

I also get Premiere becoming very sluggish as well when editing. I have submitted my crash logs and system configs, system 32 files, dxdiag and adobe tech support sent it to engineering.

I was told be Adobe “It’s a hardware issue, we can’t help you any further”.

    I am on the Intel Q6600 as well, my specs are as follows;

    Intel Quadcore 6600 2.4ghz
    2x2gb of OCZ ddr2 ram 667mhz
    Asus Motherboard P5N32-E SLI Plus
    Graphics XFX Nvidia 8800gtx 768mb ddr3
    Adobe production Studio Premium cs3

I was told it’s a component in my pc, I am sure Adobe are aware of the component which is causing the crash but they are un-willing to tell me which, I checked my hardware cpu, memory with stress test and doing other encoding tasks onnew build of the system and it’s lighting fast.

Just seems to be un-stable with cs3 video applications.

For example now,I can’t captue anything via dv/hdv via firewire i get a message in the Premeire pro cs3 capture window “Can’t activate recorder” I have disabled startup items, just running a clean system here are my steps.

I am on a bare bones system running the following

    Xp Pro
    Nvidia Chipset for Asus motherboard
    Nvidia graphics card drivers
    XP sp3
    Windows Updates
    Quicktime
    Adobe Production premium cs3
    Adobe cs3 updates

latets updates to everything on the bios, motherbaord drivers, graphics, latest Quicktime, and all the Adobe software updated. For your info I did this build 25th November 2008.

So it’s either the hardware conflicting with Adobe or Adobe is just buggy.

my friend has the same processor and I think the same Nvidia card but on an Intel motherboard and he is having severe issues. So it looks like these hardware does not work. I am researching about getting a new system now as I just can’t edit with what I have now.

    I have been told the HP XW8600 works “perfect” with Adobe cs3/cs4 on this setup;

    1 Dual Quad Core Configuration
    SYS, HP XW8600, Base
    HP XW8600 800W 80+ Efficient Chassis
    Xeon 5450 3.00GHz/12MB QC 1333 FSB (1st)
    Xeon 5450 3.00GHz/12MB QC 1333 FSB (2ND)
2x High Performance Heatsink Thermal Kit
    No Floppy Option
    NVIDIA Quadro FX3700 512mb PCIe
    8GB (4X2GB) DDR2-667 PC2-5300 ECC FBD
    250GB SATA 3GB/s NCQ 7200 (1st)
    16X DVD+/-RW,SuperMulti SATA,1st
    Pioneer Blu-Ray BDR-202BK Recorder, 2nd
XW84/94 SAS Back Panel Connector Kit
    HP xw8600 Localization Kit US
    PS2 Scroll Mouse
    PS2 Keyboard
Windows XP Installed also comes with Vista Install Disks
XW86 SAS Back Panel Connector Kit-SAS int to ext cable kit

I am un-willing to really upgrade but I can’t edit/work with my Adobe video software on my configuration as it should just work without the lsits of issues I have been having since I bought cs3 in September 2007.

Apparently the HP workstation listed above has been tested and certified, plus Blackmagic Design capture cards I have and use certified this setup.

So if all the companies are saying this works, then it seemsa good deal if I can work and not worry about being a technician and wasting all my time on the phone/email to Adobe and not getting anywhere.

Also Dean, what other software or hardware do you have nay capture cards, Cineform, any other software or hardware over a clean system with cs4?

Leo – I cut with an HP workstation and it’s great. I would really recommend it.

    Hello Eric,

Thanks, do you have the spec you are running? And are you using cs3/cs4 and is it stable for SD and HD editing and After effects work?

    Thanks,

    Leo

Hey guys – thanks for all your help. Unfortunately…I’m still having major issues with PPro CS4. I tried to render out a small 10-minute clip last night and Adobe Media Encoder said it would take 14 hours to render it out. Sony Vegas does it in about an hour or so. My computer system and PPro CS4 are not working well together. So at least for now – I’ve decided to forget about PPro and stay with Vegas. Vegas isn’t the ideal program but at least it works 😛

Do you guys have any experience with Final Cut Pro? I have some buds here in Hollywood that are using FCP and they all tell me that I should pick up a MAC and FCP and stop dealing with PC (windows) headaches.

Leo – we’ve got CS4 running on an HP 8400 with dual quad core xeons, 6GB of RAM, and Vista 64. It cuts SD and HDV without breaking a sweat, and XDCAM HD is no problem too. AVCHD with PPro CS4 does slow things down a bit, but not so much that we can’t work with it…which isn’t that often so far.

Dean – I’d say you have something there that’s causing the slow down – some sort of conflict or hardware setup. What kind of hard drives do you have, and how many? What kind of footage are you trying to cut?

What are you trying to export?

FCP is a great system, but trust me – it has it’s own set of problems. Check over in the FCP forum and have a peak…
