I switched from Premiere Pro to FCP almost 4 years ago. But I did it mainly for workflow and collaboration reasons. At the time my hardware was working fine with Premiere. I actually have CS3 loaded on my MacPro and use Premiere every now and again when I can. I also just got Premiere Pro CS4 installed on a few PC workstations and have been quite happy with it.

I do understand your pain though. I had used Premiere since the very early days. I certainly had my ups and downs with it. PC hardware has always been difficult for software vendors to keep up with and program for. Not to mention the varied OS versions and their quirks. I guess that is why FCP, being a Apple product, works very well with the limited amount of hardware and OSs it has to support. But, there are still issues. Like Erik says, just have a peek over at the FCP forums to see the what folks are putting up with.

There is no perfect one-size-fits-all solution in this racket. I find that if I base my tool set on my workflow, editing style, and tolerance for downtime, I end up with a system that doesn’t get in my way a whole lot.

Thanks Eric, I think just getting a HP workstation would be the best option for me as i am having severe problems like Dean and can’t seem to solve these.

I will be cutting Cineform HD, Uncompressed SD 10bit 4:2:2, tools will be a Blakcmagic Multibridge Eclipse, and Cineform prospect HD with Production premium cs4 on this config of HP xw8600. So Premeire pro cs4 seems very stable on this setup then? With no funny quirks and weird crashs?

Eric, how well does the dynamic link function work? Are you able to bring in an AE comp into your Premiere timeline and play it ok?

I have very few crashes with my workstation. And as for DL, it works much better with Vista 64 – I can bounce back and forth with much ease now then in CS3 and XP 32.

    I am now on the HP XW8600 workstation;

    8gb of ram
    Nvidia Quadro 3700 512mb
    2x Xeon 5450 3ghz
    Vista 64bit Business

I am getting crashes with CS3 of Premiere pro, After effects.

I can be editing in Premiere then razor blade a clip or go to move a clip, or even go through my thumbmail list of media in my project window and I get Adobe premeire pro has encounted a serious error and has to be restarted.

I get an error when I am trying to export to h264 from the Adobe premeire pro cs3 Media encoder.

I get Un-known error has occured when I reach the end of rednering the filem and no file gets created. I get Adobe Premire pro has stopped responding errors as well.

I get After Effects errors when trying to export normal dv footage, or just tryin to import videos, or go to launch Premeire and After effects. I been tryin gto deal with Adobe tech support but they have run out of troubleshooting ideas so I am on my own!

I got this quote from the HP PDF brochure advertising HP and Production Premium.

MEET THE CHALLENGE WITH HP AND ADOBE.
Working together, HP and Adobe help you solve some of your toughest design challenges with innovative hardware and software that are tuned

    and integrated for better performance.
Adobe revolutionizes how the world engages with ideas and information. For more than two decades, the company’s award-winning software and

technologies have redefined business, entertainment and personal communications by setting new standards for producing and delivering content

that engages people virtually anywhere at any time.
HP engineers work closely with Adobe to verify that HP Workstations can take full advantage of the features of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production

Premium. Adobe applications are thoroughly tested and certified on HP Workstations, giving you greater confidence in your production solution.

If it has been tested and certifed? Then why am I getting the same issues?

I am pissed off now as spent more money on a brand new workstation the HPXW8600 as my Quadcorebefore that Adobe told me its a hadrware issue the problems I have been getting, so I went out and got this new machine and the exact same porolems! Which is supposed to be supported and certified and still can’t get any support.

Does anyone have a stable CS3/CS4 system based around this config? What about with a blackmagic capture card and Cienform in the same machine as well?

First off, make sure you’ve updated all the software – PPro to version 3.2. Also, I notice you’re running Vista 64. I’ve heard of others having issues with CS3 and Vista 64. If you can run it on Vista 64, or even good old XP, you may find a better experience. I know that CS4 is set up to run better on Vista 64, but not CS3.

Hey All….just thought I would post on the subject of CS3 and Vista 64. I run CS3 on a Core 2 with an 8800 GTS graph card, Vista 64 and 8GB of RAM. I have yet to experience a problem with it. I work in PPro, Encore, PS, and AE every day of the week for my day job and also for my own business. I spend somewhere in the neighbrhood of 14+ hours a day just about every day working in CS3. No problems whatsoever. Maybe I am “lucky” but Vista 64 and CS3 get along wonderfully. I honestly couldnt be happier.

Also for giggles I tried running CS3 on my Quad core editing station at work after i just installed a fresh copy of the Windows 7 64-bit OS and it works fantastic! Even as a Beta, Windows 7 is running it very well. I am really enjoying Windows 7 so far…..I had ppro, ps and ae projects open and was working in and out of them without issue…..and my ppro projects are not small 5 min clips either. I shoot live productions that are usually 2 hours duration give or take, with 4 cameras. I multicam all 4 cameras in ppro’s multicamera editor and it doesnt even blink. Half the time I capture to a WD USB external drive and have had no problems there either. I am very pleased with CS3. and EXTREMELY pleased with Vista 64 and WIN 7 64.

    Best of Luck.

Thought I’d add my two cents.

CS4 is very buggy on my Dell 1520. Frequent freezes for no apparent reason. Granted my hardware isn’t a super duper, fire breather, but every other program, including 3d animation, seems quite happy. CS4 does not work with my second screen, either. Go figure. It’s the first program to have any issue whatsoever with an additional monitor.

If anyone has any ideas on a solution to that (quick fix) I’d love to hear it!

I’ll be getting a new computer eventually which will hopefully reduce my woes.

    Thanks,

    Jeff G.
